04:16 Christmas vacations: 15 of the best places to go
Christmas vacations: 15 of the best places to go

Anyplace can throw up a few lights and call it a holiday celebration, but travelers who really adore Christmas want more.
In 2022, many places are returning to a livelier holiday season after two years of subdued or canceled festivities because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
From England to the Philippines, these 15 destinations around the world traditionally offer up some of the best holiday atmosphere for a Christmas-drenched vacation:
Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland
While popular lore would have us believe the North Pole as the official home of Santa Claus and his jolly missus, the Finns would have us believe otherwise.
For them, Rovaniemi is Christmas HQ, located just north of the Arctic Circle in Lapland. Children here make gingerbread cookies with Mrs. Claus, enroll in Elf School or take a calligraphy class and compose their Christmas wish lists with a traditional quill.
You may also want to visit the Ranua Wildlife Park, home to baby polar bears, wolverines and moose.
The Arktikum is a science center where the mystery of the northern lights is revealed.
Those in search of a truly frosty experience can stay in the Arctic Snow Hotel, made entirely of snow and ice, but equipped with saunas and hot tubs in which to thaw.
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Close to Philadelphia and New York City, Bethlehem offers a smaller-city Christmas escape.
Settled in the 1700s by Moravian colonists, Bethlehem is justifiably proud of its Live Advent Calendar, which can be enjoyed starting at 5:30 p.m. from December 1 to 23.
It is a free, family-friendly event in which a town crier rings a bell up and down Main Street to call visitors to the Goundie House (the oldest house on Main Street). A child from the crowd is invited to come knock three times, and then a local business comes out with a surprise for everyone.
"The Christmas City" also has added new decorations, including a giant LED star, life-sized toy soldiers and thousands of lights strung up all over the place.

Bath, England
This historic city in southwest England celebrates both the birth of Jesus and the birth of Jane Austen with plenty of fanfare.

The Jane Austen Centre -- and on-site Regency Tearoom -- is the best place to learn about the city's most famous resident.
The Theatre Royal, which Austen mentions in "Northanger Abbey" and "Persuasion," has a varied program of holiday drama, musicals, opera and concerts.

The Bath Christmas Market has a multitude of wooden chalets selling distinctively British handmade crafts in a quaint Georgian setting. Straddled between the imposing Bath Abbey and the venerable Roman Baths, the market offers a festive way to discover the character of this historic city.
Bath on Ice is a great excuse to bundle up and lace up skates.
San Fernando, Philippines
If Asia were to have a Christmas capital, San Fernando in the heavily Roman Catholic Philippines would be a top nomination.
The city, northwest of Manila, is renowned for its Giant Lantern Festival, which starts on December 17 and ends January 1. San Fernando's lantern-making tradition dates back to the late 18th century.
The highlight of a visit here is the parol, a colorful, electric Christmas lantern that symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem. The parols recall psychedelic kaleidoscopes, brilliant stained glass windows, prismatic pinwheels or oversized snowflakes.
Barcelona, Spain
Anyone who can manage to extend their holiday until the 12th day of Christmas -- aka Three Kings Day or Epiphany -- can catch up with Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar in Barcelona.
On the evening of January 5, the kings (also known as the "three wise men") arrive in bearded and velvet-robed splendor at the city's port on the Santa Eulalia, their very own ship.
Cannons are fired, fireworks are set off, and as the mayor hands them the keys to the city, the magic of the Magi officially commences.
They parade through the streets in a magnificent cavalcade of floats that includes camels, elephants, giraffes and dazzling costumes.
New York City
Rockefeller Center lies at the core of the New York Christmas. Its famed ice rink has been around since 1936; the decorated tree has been a holiday tradition since 1931.
Nearby Radio City hosts the annual Christmas Spectacular, starring the Rockettes.
On the southwest corner of Central Park, Columbus Circle hosts more than 100 vendors selling clothes, gifts, snacks and drinks at the Holiday Market.
Fashion's biggest labels join in the festivities, making appearances in elaborate Christmas displays at Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy's Herald Square flagship store and other department stores.
Nairobi, Kenya
The magic of Christmas is in the holiday chaos of the Kenyan capital.
Visitors will find boisterous carol music blaring in different languages at various stores, on public transportation and in the long lines at restaurants and supermarkets.
A visit to a friend's house or popular eatery might mean a plate heaped with chapati (flat bread), a spicy rice known as pilau and grilled meat -- or nyama choma in Swahili -- just to name a few.
Revelers can burn off the calories with a hike at the scenic Karura Forest Reserve, a haven for outdoor enthusiasts made popular by Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai.
Iconic Nairobi National Park offers safari options for visitors to see rhinos, lions, giraffes, and other animals within a backdrop of the sprawling city.
For Christmas gifts, the bustling open-air markets such as Maasai offer authentic African paintings, jewelry, clothes and fabrics unique to Kenya.
Nuremberg, Germany
The Nuremberg Christmas market (Nurnberger Christkindlesmarkt) is a German institution, traditionally pulling in more than 2 million visitors each year. It has a lot of history behind it -- its first known written mention dates to 1628.
In "the little city of wood and cloth," visitors to market booths can find traditional, often handmade Christmas decorations, wooden toys and all sorts of food and drink.
Adults can enjoy Nuremberg spicy gingerbread and mugs of mulled wine.
And for families with the kids along, there's the Toy Museum.
Bogotá, Colombia
Colombia's high-altitude capital brightens up each year with Christmas lights galore.
In Bogotá, there's the tradition of "Ruta Navideña," or the Christmas Route. Celebrants stroll popular spots around the city to take in the dazzling displays. Click here for some of best places to go, including breathtaking Monserrate, a high mountain that dominates the city.
Día de las Velitas (Little Candles' Day) is celebrated on December 7, which is the eve of the Immaculate Conception. It officially marks the start of Christmas in Colombia. People light small candles and paper lanterns, placing them on windowsills and balconies.
Christmas is sweet here. Natilla is a custard dish that resembles a flan or pudding and is eaten alongside other festive favorites such as buñuelos (fried dough balls served hot)
There's a travel bonus to coming to Bogotá at Christmastime: It's the beginning of the dry season.

Bugatti is auctioning off its last purely gas-powered car and it’s accidentally one-of-a-kind

Bugatti will sell its very last purely gas-powered supercar at a Paris auction on February 1, 2023. The one-of-a-kind model is expected to sell for millions of dollars.

It’s a car that, Bugatti says, was never originally expected to be sold at all.

The Bugatti Chiron Profilée was being developed, starting in late 2020, as one of several versions of the Chiron, Bugatti’s primary model. Bugatti had always said that only 500 Chirons would ever be made. Included in that 500 have been a few variants, such as the Chiron Sport, Chiron Pur Sport and Chiron Super Sport, each with varying degrees of top speed, acceleration and cornering aggressiveness. (Bugatti has also made a few other models, such as the Mistral and Divo, that share engineering with the Chiron but are considered separate models.)

While the Chiron, with its turbocharged 16-cylinder engine capable of producing nearly 1,600 horsepower, offered amazing performance, the Pur Sport provided more aggressive steering and suspension and even quicker acceleration. But some customers were interested in something that was a mix of the two, offering the Pur Sport’s performance but with a mellower style.

So Bugatti engineers and designers started work on a new Chiron variant with the performance capabilities of a Pur Sport but with a more elegant, fluid design. The Profilée has a larger grille and wider front air intakes than the base Chiron to take in more air to cool the big engine. The transmission was also revised for shorter gear ratios to provide quicker acceleration and the engine is allowed to run up to higher speeds. The Profilée is the fastest-accelerating Chriron model, according to Bugatti. It’s capable of going from zero to 100 kilometers an hour, or 62 miles per hour, in just 2.3 seconds and up 200 kph, or 124 mph, in 5.5 seconds. Able to reach 236 miles an hour, it also has a higher top speed than the Pur Sport, but still not as high as some other Bugatti models that can, at least in theory, reach 300 miles an hour. The name, Profilée, comes from a type of elegant teardrop-shaped body design used on some famous Bugatti cars of the 1930s.

At some point, though, executives realized that all 500 Chiron models would already have been ordered before the Profilée could be offered to customers. Nonetheless, they decided to bring this one car, the development model engineers had been working on, to completion. The car has been certified to drive legally on European roads, and will now be sold.

The French ultra-luxury car maker had previously indicated that the convertible W16 Mistral, revealed last August, would be its last gas powered car model. Only 99 of those cars will be made at a cost of at least $5 million each. Mate Rimac, chief executive of Bugatti Rimac, Bugatti’s parent company, has said that Bugatti’s next high-performance model will be a plug-in hybrid with a a different sort of gas engine.

RM Sotheby’s did not respond to questions about the Profilée’s estimated value. Hagerty, a company that closely tracks collector car values and which owns a competing auction company, Broad Arrow, estimated that it could be worth between $6 million and $8 million. The car’s uniqueness makes it difficult to gauge it’s value, though, since there has literally never been one just like it for sale before.

“All it takes is two motivated bidders for that to go much higher,” Hagerty spokesperson Jeremy Malcolm said in an email.

To reach its unprecedented levels of performance, the CHIRON effortlessly merges its captivating beauty with sleek, muscular efficiency; a spectacular reinterpretation of the BUGATTI design DNA. The intelligent air intake management significantly improves aerodynamics and enhances the cooling efficiency for engine and brakes.

The distinctive quad LED headlights, for example, also serve as intakes routing air to the front brakes – and thus work as a remarkable example of functionality fusing with aesthetics. This enthusiasm for performance-oriented design continues in the interior, complemented by BUGATTI’s exquisite sense of comfort and luxury.

TRUE LUXURY: AN INNER VALUE
Mirroring the CHIRON´s exterior signature line, the LED illumination in the distinctive C-line form separates the two seats, and reveals the stunning functional beauty of the interior. The cockpit layout of the CHIRON gives the pilot all the necessary information within his range of vision. Proudly displaying the magic 500 km/h mark, the mechanical speedometer is a feast for the eyes. On the central console, milled from a single piece of solid aluminum, each unit has independent, adjustable displays.

DISCOVER YOUR INSPIRATION
Each CHIRON is one of a kind; an exquisite masterpiece of breathtaking power and unrivaled beauty. To build each customer’s unique work of art, BUGATTI designers collaborate closely with the owner to create a car that fits their personality, while matching the brand’s captivating legend status and ardent commitment to utmost quality. There are virtually no limits to the levels of personalization that can be achieved.

A vast selection of color and material combinations is available, from the finest hand-picked leather to precious metals. Individual engravings or embroidery add the personalized finishing touch, making every CHIRON as unique as its owner. Below you can be inspired by a small selection of the countless possibilities available:
GROUNDBREAKING ENGINEERING
The heart of the CHIRON is its quad-turbocharged 8 l W16 engine. This unique masterpiece generates an incredible 1,500 hp and 1,600 Nm of torque, with an almost linear power output between 2,000 and 6,000 rpm. Four high-performing turbochargers work in a two-stage controlled configuration, and define this champion of performance. A remarkable 60,000 liters of air are pumped through the engine every minute.

Simultaneously, 800 liters of water per minute circulate through the CHIRON’s heart, and guarantee the cooling of the engine and generate the extraordinary power. The new titanium exhaust system, with reduced gas back pressure, boosts this performance further. To maximise the CHIRON’s engine power, lightweight materials, such as titanium and carbon fiber, have been used wherever possible.

NFL Week 16 preview: Pittsburgh Steelers to honor Franco Harris on bittersweet day for franchise

When the Pittsburgh Steelers host the LA Raiders on Saturday, it will be one of those rare moments in sport where the result won’t really matter.

Instead, thoughts will be with Steelers legend Franco Harris who died earlier this week at the age of 72.

Harris’ death came just days before the 50th anniversary of the “Immaculate Reception,” a game-winning touchdown catch from Harris which led the Steelers to a famous win over the Oakland Raiders.

The Steelers will still celebrate the anniversary but also honor Harris’ life by retiring his No. 32 jersey at halftime of the game.

“We’re all heartbroken, but we do look forward to honoring him and his legacy this weekend,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said, per ESPN.

“And obviously, where our attention needs to be is on the preparation required to put together the type of performance that’s fitting of a great man like Franco.”

It’s a similar story for other teams around the NFL, with this promising to be an exciting weekend of action during the Christmas period.

Washington Commanders vs. San Francisco 49ers
For Chase Young, Christmas will come a day early with the 23-year-old expected to make his long-awaited season debut for the Commanders on Saturday.

Young hasn’t played since he suffered a serious knee injury in November last year but coach Ron Rivera says he’s excited to finally get back amongst it against the 49ers.

“He practiced with confidence,” Rivera said, per NFL.com, speaking about Young’s progress.

“He showed us a willingness to stick that leg in the ground and roll off of it, plant it and cut off of it. He had a good week, so we’re pretty excited about that.”

This game is a great opportunity for the Cowboys to get on the right track, between having the home advantage and the benefit of facing a backup quarterback. Especially after last week’s loss, they need this win much more than the Eagles; they need all the momentum they can get in the final weeks of the regular season to carry into the playoffs.

Tune into the NFC East showdown on Saturday at 4:25 p.m. ET.

Miami Dolphins vs. Green Bay Packers
It’s going to be a nail-biting spectacle on Christmas Day with both teams looking to keep their wafer-thin postseason hopes alive.

The Dolphins can guarantee a playoff berth by winning all of their three remaining games but go into Sunday’s clash on the back of three consecutive defeats.

The Packers, meanwhile, are coming off back-to-back victories but their playoff destiny is still not in their hands.

They must win all three of their remaining games and hope either the New York Giants or Washington Commanders slip up.

“What is the most important thing is that we’re still playing a meaningful football game on Christmas and got a chance to have a lot of things in front of us,” Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers told reporters.

“We’ve got to go down and get a win, and I said a few weeks ago, we just get one, then we get another one, and things look a little bit different going into this game. And we get this one, things look a little bit different going into the next one.”

Buffalo Bills vs. Chicago Bears
The Bears (3-11) will welcome the Bills (11-3) to Chicago.

The forecast predicts below freezing temperatures, gusting winds, and harsh winter weather, which could play a major factor in the outcome of this game. While both teams are acclimated to playing in unfavorable conditions, their gameplans have to be adjusted for the elements.

This game features two quarterbacks who can produce in both the run game and the passing game. However, they are most efficient in opposite ways.

Bears’ quarterback Justin Fields is more effective rushing, while Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen has the edge in the air. With a clear lack of weapons on the receiving end, the Bears are going to try to run the ball as much as possible. Their game on the ground will not be as impacted by the heavy winds and winter weather.

The Bills, on the other hand, will not be able to rely as much on their superior passing game; Allen will have to adjust to how the winds impact his accuracy. For these reasons, the Bears have a slightly higher chance of handing the Bills the upset.

Kickoff is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.

Cincinnati Bengals vs. New England Patriots
Finally, the Bengals (10-4) have a shot at clinching a playoff berth against the Patriots (7-7).

They will secure their spot in the postseason if they win or tie, or if the Jets lose or tie. The Patriots are on the outside of the playoff picture looking in. They would need a win on Saturday to keep their hopes alive.

The Pats will host the Bengals at a below-freezing Gillette Stadium. They enter this game fresh off an embarrassing last-second loss to the Raiders in Week 15. They’ve struggled this season, in large part due to inexperienced leadership and questionable coaching decisions.

Cincinnati is in the midst of their hottest stretch of the season with wins in their last six contests. Quarterback Joe Burrow has hit his stride at the most important part of the regular season, getting ready to power through the postseason.

To win this game, the Bengals will need to come out strong and get ahead early; they must outpace New England. The Patriots will be playing without three starters, which means they are already operating from a disadvantage. If the Bengals come out the gate and get points up early, it will be difficult for the Pats to crawl out of a deficit.

To see who comes out on top, tune in on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.

03:59 The year in sport: A fond farewell for some, a glimpse of the future for others
The year in sport: A fond farewell for some, a glimpse of the future for others

An athlete, former jockey AP McCoy said earlier this year, is the only person who dies twice, such is the pain of walking away from the intoxicating, all-consuming nature of professional sport.

McCoy retired from his long, decorated racing career in 2015, and since then has had to learn, in his own words, how to “start again and have another life.”

Based on the past 12 months, there are some notable sports stars who might have been listening extra closely to McCoy’s experience of retirement – or indeed to anyone else who has spoken candidly about the difficulty of ending a successful sporting career.

Among them is Roger Federer, who called time on his trophy-laden tennis career at the Laver Cup in September after years spent trying to recover from two knee surgeries.

In the letter announcing his retirement, Federer, like McCoy, alluded to the heightened emotions of being a professional athlete and how they make saying goodbye so hard.

“I have laughed and cried, felt joy and pain, and most of all I have felt incredibly alive,” Federer wrote. “To the game of tennis,” he signed off the letter, “I love you and will never leave you.”

Those final words were reassuring for fans who have admired Federer’s career for so many years, but also spoke to another issue: namely, of how hard it can be to walk away entirely from professional sport after retirement.

It remains to be seen exactly how Federer will remain involved in tennis moving forward, and the same can be said of Serena Williams, who announced she would “evolve away from tennis” ahead of this year’s US Open – but refused to say she was retiring.

On several occasions over the past three months, the 23-time grand slam champion has even teased fans about a potential return to tennis.

Lengthening careers
While Federer and Williams have stepped away from their careers as two of the greatest athletes of all time, other sports stars can’t seem to decide when, or how, to walk away.

Heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury has yo-yoed in and out of retirement this year, saying in October that he’s finding it “really hard to let this thing go.”

And earlier this year, Tom Brady announced he would be retiring from the NFL, leaving the sport as a seven-time Super Bowl champion and arguably the greatest quarterback of all time. the 45-year-old then reversed that decision and is still breaking records with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his 23rd season in the NFL.

However in September, Brady and Gisele Bündchen announced they were to divorce after 13 years of marriage.

“I think there is a lot of professionals in life that go through things that they deal with at work and they deal with at home,” the Bucs quarterback said on his weekly podcast a few days the couple’s divorce announcement.

“Obviously, the good news is it’s a very amicable situation, and I’m really focused on two things: taking care of my family, and certainly my children, and secondly doing the best job I can to win football games. That’s what professionals do.”

Brady has redefined what most believed to be the average shelf-life of an athlete, and he’s not the only person refusing to let the light dim on his career.

LeBron James is about to turn 38 but is still setting records in the NBA – in February passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most combined regular season and postseason points in NBA history.

Federer’s rivals Rafael Nadal, 36, and Novak Djokovic, 35, meanwhile, have added to their grand slam tallies this year – the Mallorcan at the Australian Open and French Open, where he became the oldest men’s singles champion, and the Serbian at Wimbledon. Djokovic’s Wimbledon triumph moved him to within one grand slam title of Nadal’s men’s record of 22.

Having been deported from Australia over his vaccination status at the start of the year, Djokovic is set to compete at the Australian Open at the start of 2023 – a tournament he has won on nine previous occasions and is favorite to win again next year off the back of his recent ATP Finals victory.

For Nadal, his future in the sport rests on the amount of strain his injury-ravaged body can continue to withstand.

In golf, Tiger Woods faces similar questions. The 15-time major champion completed a stunning return from serious leg injuries suffered in a car crash at this year’s Masters, scoring a remarkable one-under 71 at Augusta National before making the cut the following day.

Then there’s sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who turns 36 later this month but has shown no signs of slowing down. The Jamaican produced a string of consistently fast performances this year, running under 10.7 seconds for the 100 meters a record seven times and claiming her fifth world championship title over the distance in July.

And it’s not just athletes who have defied the call of retirement this year. In November, 73-year-old Dusty Baker became the oldest ever manager to win the World Series when he guided the Houston Astros to a 4-2 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Familiar faces and future stars
Many of the athletes who stole the headlines in 2022 have been doing so for years.

No one is sure where an aging Cristiano Ronaldo will play his club football in January after ending his second spell at Manchester United in ignominious fashion, but the 37-year-old still appears to be set on extending his playing career after Portugal’s quarterfinal exit from the World Cup.

His rival Lionel Messi, meanwhile, ended the year on a sensational high, guiding Argentina to a third World Cup trophy. The 35-year-old Messi scored twice in an absorbing final against France and finally got his hands on the World Cup at the fifth time of asking, further staking his claim as the game’s greatest ever player.

That hasn’t been the only recent instance of an established superstar winning silverware. In last season’s NBA Finals, Steph Curry guided the Golden State Warriors to a fourth championship title in eight seasons – in the process picking up his first Finals MVP award as the Warriors beat the Boston Celtics.

In baseball, meanwhile, Aaron Judge enjoyed a season for the ages. The 30-year-old outfielder, who has reportedly just signed a nine-year, $360 million deal with the New York Yankees, hit 62 home runs last season, breaking Roger Maris’ single-season American League (AL) home run record from 1961.

On Wednesday, the Yankees named Judge, the reigning AL MVP, as the 16th captain in the franchise’s history.

But even as familiar faces have continued to shine, the past year has also seen future stars emerge.

The 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz ends the year as the youngest No. 1 in the history of the men’s tennis having triumphed at the US Open, and in the women’s game, Iga Swiatek, who rose to No. 1 in the world following Ashleigh Barty’s decision to retire after winning the Australian Open, looks set to dominate for years to come.

This year, the 21-year-old Swiatek won her second grand slam title at the French Open – which came in the middle of a 37-match winning streak – and her third at the US Open.

In Formula One, Max Verstappen has cemented his position as the best driver in the sport, comfortably defending his world title with four races to spare, while Erling Haaland, regarded as one of the best strikers in European football, has been scoring goals at a record-breaking rate during his first season at Manchester City.

At the Winter Olympics in Beijing, then-18-year-old freestyle skier Eileen Gu stole the headlines, winning two gold medals and a silver for the host nation; she also became the first freestyle skier to earn three medals at a single Olympics.

Another teenager, figure skater Kamila Valieva, had a memorable Games for different reasons. The 16-year-old tested positive for trimetazidine, a heart medication, in December 2021, but the result didn’t come to light until Valieva was already in Beijing and had won gold in the figure skating team event.

In that competition, she became the first woman to land a quadruple jump – which involves four spins in the air – at the Winter Olympics.

The outcome from the positive test remains unresolved, and in November, the World Anti-Doping Agency referred Valieva’s case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after deeming the Russian Anti-Doping Agency had made no progress.

Argentine stars Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul fly in helicopter over parade due to crowd size

Argentine national soccer team stars Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul, along with coach Lionel Scaloni, were forced to fly in a helicopter over the center of Buenos Aires after their bus got stuck in the massive crowds gathered to watch the parade celebrating the country’s World Cup victory, Argentine federal police said on Tuesday.

A bus carrying the entire team departed from the Argentine Football Association’s (AFA) headquarters and was set to head to the Obelisk, a historic monument in the capital.

However, the bus was not able to progress due to crowds gathered on the streets, Claudio ‘Chiqui’ Tapia, the president of the Argentine Football Association said on Tuesday.
“They won’t let us go to greet all the people who were at the Obelisk, the same security agencies that escorted us, won’t allow us to move forward,” Tapia said.

“A thousand apologies on behalf of all the champion players.”

At least one person has died in Buenos Aires amid the celebrations this week, according to a statement from the city’s health ministry sent to CNN on Wednesday.

A 24-year-old man was taken to the Fernandez Hospital early Monday morning after he sustained a head injury after falling from a roof, according to the Buenos Aires city health ministry statement.

The man passed away at the hospital on Tuesday.

‘Dale Campeón’
The players were flown over the Obelisk and other areas and then flown back to the AFA training site in Ezeiza, outside of Buenos Aires, police said.

State-owned Télam news agency reported that four million people came out to see the parade in Buenos Aires, citing police.

According to Argentine outlet InfoFunes, Messi and Ángel Di María flew back to their districts in their native city of Rosario, Sante Fe province, by helicopter after arriving by plane to Rosario’s local airport.

Messi eventually arrived at his house by car to be greeted by a huge crowd of fans celebrating his triumphant return, chanting “Dale Campeón, Dale Campeón” – “Let’s go champion.”

Fellow Santa Fe natives Scaloni and forward Ángel Correa also flew back, but InfoFunes reported this was via a late airplane flight.
Tuesday had been declared a national holiday in Argentina following the team’s thrilling penalty shootout victory over France in Qatar on Sunday.

The team’s highly-anticipated return continues several days of celebration across the country , following Argentina’s World Cup success

Superstars Messi and Kylian Mbappé faced off on the pitch, in what has widely been called the greatest World Cup final of all time.

Mbappé was defending France’s 2018 win at the tournament in Russia, while 35-year-old Messi was playing in what may be his final World Cup match, looking to claim the trophy which had eluded him for so long.

Argentina took an early lead in the first half through a Messi penalty and a wonderful counterattacking goal from Di Maria, before France roared back in the second half with two Mbappé goals that forced the match into extra time.

Messi scored his second goal of the match to restore his team’s lead – but Mbappé netted a second penalty to grab his hat-trick and take the final to a penalty shootout, which ended with triumph for Argentina after France missed two of its spot kicks.
After covering his first World Cup in 1986 as an editor, Botterill took a career break and even turned down the chance to go to the 1990 World Cup as he was busy scaffolding. He returned to photography to cover the 1994 World Cup and has been to every edition since.

Born near the English town of Northampton in 1967, Botterill got his first break at the age of 16 at the agency founded by renowned sports photographer Bob Thomas, working in the dark room.

Given his vast portfolio and the number of major events he’s covered, Botterill struggles to pick out a favorite photo of his.

He reveals that photographers are “kind of funny,” rarely dwelling too long on a snap and instead are always looking forward to the “next decent picture.”

When everything does come together, however, as it did on Sunday at the Lusail Stadium, Botterill does take a moment to enjoy it.

“I think when you get a picture of a player or a sports person that is really up there, you know, they can debate is he the greatest ever; is it Pelé? Is it Maradona?” he says.

“But the bottom line is he [Messi] is up there, so if you get a really nice picture of a great player, it’s kind of a nice feeling.

“He’s a great, he’s fantastic, he’s unbelievable. So that kind of gives you the buzz, to get a really good picture.

“Everybody else can decide what they think about the photo, but it’s a really nice picture of one of the greatest players ever, so that’s nicest bit for me. This is why you got to work.”

01:31 Why this has been a culturally unique World Cup
Why this has been a culturally unique World Cup

This was never going to be a traditional World Cup.

Breaking ground in the Middle East and played for the first time in the European winter, it was always going to look and feel different.

Qatar was described by some as the most controversial World Cup tournament host, with criticism ranging from alleged corruption in the bidding process to a callous disregard for human rights.
It is undoubtedly right to shine a light on the deaths and conditions endured by migrant workers to make this tournament happen, and LGBTQ and women’s rights too, although some Qataris might wonder why their country came under such intense criticism when countries with questionable human rights records, or laws that curtail the freedoms of certain members of society, have also hosted major sporting events in recent years.

The last World Cup was held in Russia, for example, a country that has made it illegal for anyone to promote same-sex relationships or suggest that non-heterosexual orientations are “normal.”

But the world is complicated and full of contradictions, and hosting a major sporting event is about more than a country’s politics. It’s also about its culture and its people, their hopes and their dreams.

Over the last four weeks, this tiny Gulf State truly became a global village. Fans of all 32 teams, along with supporters from many other countries, mingled cheek by jowl in a way that was never possible in previous tournaments, which were spread across much larger geographical areas.

Sometimes it was hard to tell who was cheering for who as processions of cheering fans would follow drummers through Souq Waqif, a marketplace in downtown Doha, drunk only on the joy of the shared experience.

“The atmosphere here in Qatar is like a Moroccan wedding,” one supporter told CNN in the thick of the festivities. “When everyone is enjoying the music and singing, it’s like a big party.”

Morocco’s thrilling run to the semifinals was a watershed moment for the sport, the first time that a team from outside Europe and South America had made it to the final week in the tournament’s 92-year history.

But even before the Atlas Lions’ stirring win against Portugal, it was already Africa’s most successful World Cup, as it was for Asia, too, which saw three teams – Japan, South Korea, and Australia – make it to the round of 16 for the first time ever. In 2005, world governing body FIFA ratified Australia’s switch from the Oceania Football Confederation to the Asian Football Confederation.

There have certainly been matches that will be remembered for years to come.

Saudi Arabia scored a result for the ages, beating Argentina in its opening match, while Iran managed to shine, despite the protests and violence in their homeland with admirable performances against Wales and the US.
This was a tournament in which the underdogs challenged the old-world order, and won universal respect for doing so.

Moroccan supporter Boubker Benna told CNN that he believes the message of this World Cup has been self-determination.

“You may be an underdog,” he said, “but if you do your work, you can achieve big, big things. That’s what [Morocco head coach] Walid Regragui is trying to prove. And that’s what Morocco is trying to prove.”

It’s not unusual to see African fans rooting for other teams from their continent, but it has been particularly striking to witness the shared joy in Qatar, where CNN spoke to fans from Egypt, Syria, Sudan, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and the Palestinian territories, all cheering for Morocco in the later stages.

“If France is playing, you will find only French people supporting their team, never England or Germany behind them. And I don’t know why,” explained Moroccan fan Adam Marzoug.
He continued: “That’s why it’s special for the Arab and Muslim and African countries. That’s what makes us strong in every tournament, this is just the beginning.”

His friend, Oumaima Amallah, added: “Despite all the political and historical problems, Muslims, Arabs and Africans love each other and they are like brothers and sisters and everyone is happy for us, like they would be happy for their own nation.”

It was almost poetic that Morocco overturned two of its former colonizers, Spain and Portugal, and went toe-to-toe with a third, France. But any score settling was done politely, with respect.

Supporters who spoke with CNN would always praise Qatar for hosting the World Cup and express gratitude and thanks for bringing it to the region.

And although there was surprise, even an outcry in some media establishments, when Budweiser vending stations were removed from the stadium concourses on the eve of the tournament, did anyone really miss the alcohol?

Certainly, many that we spoke to, including the former player turned broadcaster Ally McCoist, agreed that the atmosphere among the crowds was much more congenial as a result.
We watched security personnel in the stadia respectfully asking shirtless Argentina fans to cover up, humbly gesturing with their palms closed by their chest. Local customs were followed and cultures exchanged. The sea of humanity that flowed from every stadium to Metro station passed by a series of musicians and dancers.

What might have once been described as a culture clash felt more like a cultural exchange here in Qatar.

“We must be open minded,” said another Moroccan fan, David Hamriri, an engineer who currently works in Europe. “I am very rich, culturally, because I am open minded.

“We have emotions,” he continued, “We have many conflicts in the world. But when we enjoy football, we forget this problem. We forget the economic crisis, and we return to the origin. A value of humanity, shared between Occidental and Oriental society. I find it amazing.”
The fans CNN spoke to were leaving Qatar with positive memories of their experiences.

England fan Theo Ogden, who attended all of the tournament’s 64 games, told CNN: “People said that you couldn’t host it in the desert, and they proved them wrong.

“They’ve been so welcoming. You won’t find a fan out here who will say that they had a bad time, and it’s because they are so hospitable. I don’t think that gets spoken about enough.”

Ogden could only have attempted his feat at this World Cup, where every stadium was just a metro or cab ride away.

The landmass of the 2026 World Cup will be almost 2,000 times bigger in the USA, Mexico and Canada. Qatar managed to turn the world’s most popular game into something much smaller, and it was all the better for it.

From the results on the field, to the experience on the ground. Qatar 2022 has been memorable.

08:50 Why Argentina’s win over France was the greatest World Cup final ever
Why Argentina’s win over France was the greatest World Cup final ever

It seems only yesterday that Enner Valencia was swatting aside Qatar in the 2022 World Cup’s curtain raiser.

As the dust settles on an enthralling month of soccer action, fans have been treated to arguably one of the greatest ever World Cup tournaments in the sport’s history.
In fitting fashion, Sunday’s final exploded like a firework display to provide the ultimate conclusion to Qatar 2022.

This was a final that had superstar rivalries, penalties, iconic goals and goalkeeping masterclasses, culminating in Lionel Messi’s crowning as world champion after Argentina beat France on penalties.

The pièce de resistance, a moment that will live long in the memory like an impressionistic masterpiece, is that iconic image of Messi – lifted aloft on his teammates’ shoulders – with the World Cup trophy finally in his hands.

The clashing of two stars
This match had been billed as Kylian Mbappé vs. Messi – the 23-year-old French star ready to assume the mantle of the world’s greatest player from his 35-year-old Paris Saint-Germain teammate.
Mbappé was defending France’s 2018 win at the tournament in Russia, Messi was playing in his final World Cup match, looking to claim the trophy which has eluded him for so long and which would enable him to match Diego Maradona’s achievement of winning the 1986 competition.

The opening 79 minutes was all about Messi. Argentina’s captain converted the penalty to give Argentina the lead. Next, his deft touch was key in springing the move which led to La Albiceleste’s second.

Then in the closing stages of normal time, Mbappé single-handedly took a grip of the game, scoring two goals in two minutes and sending the final to extra time.

Messi looked shot and Mbappé looked like he was just getting going.

Except it was the diminutive Argentine who next popped up to score his second goal of the match and restore his team’s lead in the 109th minute.

Refusing to accept defeat, Mbappé roused his teammates, scoring a second penalty to grab his hat-trick and take the final to a penalty shootout.

Both Mbappé and Messi scored in the shootout but in the end – with France missing two penalties – it was the Argentina captain who was mobbed by his teammates as his World Cup dream was lived out in real time.

Over two hours of soccer, these was two players – at two different points of their careers – demonstrating the beautiful game in vivid, glorious technicolor.

From the spot
The last time a World Cup final went to penalties was in 2006 when France was once again beaten, this time by Italy.

Sometimes, it feels unfair to settle a game in a shootout, a series of actions between the penalty taker and the goalkeeper.

However, at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday, the abundance of penalties seemed to ratchet up the pressure and tension.

Messi’s penalty in the first half gave him his first World Cup final goal, while his spot kick in the shootout was coolness personified.

Mbappé’s ability to not once, not twice, but three times successfully convert from the spot in one game showed extreme gumption.

http://blog.ub.ac.id/faridmuzayyani/2022/12/20/why-argentinas-win-over-france-was-the-greatest-world-cup-final-ever/

Previously at Qatar 2022, one team had already experienced the intensity of that pressure cooker atmosphere and emerged the other side, and one which had not.

Argentina got the better of the Netherlands in the quarterfinals in an epic which culminated in a penalty shootout, and one which saw the South American team display distraction and delaying tactics to arguably mentally monster their opponents.

In Sunday’s final, Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez showing his ability to distract the French takers, throwing the ball away before Aurélien Tchouaméni attempt, which flew wide. France’s previous attempt – from Kingsley Coman – had been saved by Martinez.

A penalty shootout is arguably unlike anything else in sports – it’s a modern day duel and a World Cup final with so much at stake only heightens the tension and drama.
Great goals
World Cup finals are often tight and cagey affairs, with goals at a premium.

Argentina and France threw away that playbook – delivering six goals, two of which were of the highest quality.

Argentina’s second was arguably as good as Carlos Alberto’s breathtaking goal in the 1970 World Cup final in Brazil’s 4-1 win over Italy.

It was in the 35th minute, when a flick round the corner from Alexis Mac Allister to Messi, relieved some pressure on the Argentina defense as France pushed for an equalizer.

After Messi’s deft touch to Julián Álvarez and the Manchester City forward’s excellently weighted pass to Mac Allister, who had continued his run, Argentina was in on goal.

Unselfishly, Mac Allister had the presence of mind to square the ball to Ángel Di María who finished off a brilliant sweeping counterattack to put Argentina 2-0 up.

Di María celebrates after he scored Argentina's second goal against France in the World Cup final.
At that point, it looked to be the crowning moment of a dominant Argentina victory, until Mbappé stepped up.

After his penalty reduced the deficit to 2-1, a neat one-two with Marcus Thuram had the ball falling to the PSG star out of the sky on the edge of Argentina’s penalty area.

With seemingly all the time in the world, Mbappé produced a wonderful display of technique and timing to thunder the ball past a despairing Martínez.

These are the moments that capture imaginations and the moments that came to define the 2022 World Cup final.

It will be remembered for so many reasons – Messi’s moment of history, Mbappé’s hat-trick in defeat, the seesaw nature of the game that oscillated from end to end and never ceased to tug on gobsmacked watchers’ emotions.

Other great World Cup finals
Of course, there’s plenty of competition for the title of ‘greatest World Cup final.’

In 1950, Uruguay upset Brazil in Rio de Janeiro, while four years later, West Germany provided another huge surprise, beating Hungary’s Magical Magyars, earning the country its first World Cup title.

Geoff Hurst scored the first World Cup final hat-trick in the 1966 final between England and West Geramy. Hurst’s second goal is still talked about 56 years later – had the ball crossed the line? It did, according to the game’s officials and England won 4-2.

The 1970 final marked Pelé’s last World Cup appearance as he secured his third title in Brazil’s swashbuckling victory over Italy.

Four years later in Munich, host West Germany came from behind to win 2-1 against a star-studded Netherlands team – made up of Johan Cruyff and Johan Neeskens – to win its second World Cup.

Much like Messi at Qatar 2022, Diego Maradona almost single-handedly drove his team to its second title in eight years, beating West Germany 3-2 in the final.

In 1998, France hosted and won its first World Cup, mainly down to the genius of Zinedine Zidane, who scored twice in the final, to beat a formidable Brazil side, composed of Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Cafu, Bebeto and Roberto Carlos.

However, with its multiples story lines and the drama and artistry on display, surely the 2022 showpiece now owns the title of ‘greatest World Cup final.’

Stepping out of Maradona’s shadow. How Lionel Messi won over the hearts of all of Argentina
When engaging in discussions or debates about the greatest players of all time, soccer fans and pundits will often point to tangible achievements: trophies, individual accolades or scoring records.

What is often overlooked in those discussions, however, are the players’ intangible achievements – how they make fans feel and the emotions they stir up when they take to the pitch.

Few nationalities feel soccer more than Argentines, which has been abundantly apparent during the national team’s run to Sunday’s World Cup final, with an estimated 40,000 fans, vociferous in their support, traveling to Qatar for the tournament.

After Argentina’s semifinal win over Croatia, one Argentine journalist from national broadcaster TVP decided to give Messi a message with her final question in the mixed zone, instead of asking him a question.

“The World Cup final is coming and, of course, all Argentines want to win, but I just wanted to tell you that no matter the result, there’s something that nobody can take away from you and that is that you have touched every single one of us,” Sofia Martinez said.

“There is no child that doesn’t have your jersey, be it authentic or a fake, truly you have touched everyone’s lives and that, for me, is bigger than winning a World Cup. Nobody can take that away from you.

“It is gratitude for a such a great moment of joy that you have given to so many people and I hope you take these words to heart because I believe that is more important than winning a World Cup.”

Her words will more than likely resonate with the vast majority of the Argentine population as Messi’s performances for the national team in recent years have lifted him to a godlike status.

“The only way in which that love would change, is for the better if they win,” Argentine journalist Santi Bauzá tells CNN.

“Because I feel that what he has achieved so far at this World Cup, basically doing what his fiercest critics have been demanding from him for so long, to finally become that man who can solve every single game for Argentina, who can appear at the toughest moments and always, always deliver.

“It was kind of like an impossible standard to meet, and he still met it. So I feel like this specific World Cup will keep hanging on in the memories of Argentines whatever happens on Sunday.”

The weight of expectation
However, it hasn’t always been that way and Messi has endured his share of heartbreak in an Argentina shirt.

Three defeats in major finals in the space of just three years – the 2014 World Cup and 2015 and 2016 Copa Américas – unsurprisingly wounded Messi, causing him to announce his retirement from international football.

For parts of Messi’s Argentina career, particularly in some of the earlier years, there was a lingering narrative that Argentine fans were indifferent towards their star player, perhaps even cold, amid accusations that he never gave his all for the famous blue and white shirt, or even that he felt more Catalan than Argentine after moving to Barcelona at such a young age.

“The key word I think here is minority,” Bauzá says. “But the truth is that there was a time in which there was a group of people here in Argentina that thought Messi was probably not fit to wear the shirt of the national team because they felt he was not Argentine enough.

“If I had to pinpoint a specific moment in which that feeling was probably most prevalent, it was the 2011 Copa America, which was held in Argentina. There were a lot of hopes for that team and specifically for Messi, who had just come off winning the Champions League in emphatic fashion for Barcelona – and in the quarterfinals they were playing in his province in Santa Fe.

“Argentina faced Uruguay; they drew and then they lost on penalties, but in the preview of that game, when the stadium announced Messi’s name, the reaction was very lukewarm. But when the stadium announced [Carlos] Tevez’s name, who was back then a lot more popular than Messi, the stadium absolutely rocked.

“But by the end of that final whistle, by the time Argentina lost, Messi was booed outside of the stadium, in his own province, by his own people, by Argentine fans. It was a shocking sight, especially now when you put it in perspective.”

It certainly didn’t help that ever since his national team debut, Messi has earned comparisons to the great Diego Maradona, who was synonymous with his effort and passion on the pitch and, crucially, guided La Albiceleste to World Cup glory in 1986.

The rumor that Messi had even considered representing Spain over Argentina persisted, despite numerous denials. “I never doubted for a second,” Messi once told TyC Sports.

Though those feelings existed among a small, but not insignificant minority, it certainly did not represent how most of Argentina’s 45 million soccer-crazy inhabitants felt about their captain, and that was never more apparent than when Messi announced his retirement.

In the wake of that announcement, it seemed as though almost the entire country united in an attempt to convince Messi to reverse his decision.

Fans organized marches and demonstrations in the streets, train and road signs were changed to plead with him to return and even then-president Mauricio Macri personally phoned Messi to try and get him to change his mind.

Messi, of course, did come out of retirement and finally experienced glory with Argentina after winning the Copa América in 2021. It’s difficult to overstate the magnitude of that victory, both for Messi and the country, with the win lifting a near-crippling weight off his shoulders.

“At this point he owes nothing to no one,” Bauzá adds. “He even broke that 28-year drought with Argentina when they won the Copa America, which already has cemented him at a very important place in the country’s history by helping, being crucial towards winning finally an international title with the national team.

“But by winning the World Cup, that would put him on another level … that would mean he would complete his career at that point. It’s the one trophy that he has always been looking for.

“No one has expressed a desire for the World Cup quite like him. So, I mean, that would be mission accomplished for him, not necessarily in the minds of Argentines, but in his own mind.”

A new Messi?
Messi has always been somewhat mild-mannered on the pitch, in particular when compared to Maradona’s famed temperament, which in part contributed to the accusations that he didn’t care as much for his country as he did for his club.

Former Argentina midfielder Ossie Ardiles, who was in the team for the country’s World Cup victory in 1978, says these comparisons, though perhaps unfair, are unavoidable.

“Messi has always lived in the shadow of Diego Maradona, the leader of our last World Cup-winning team in 1986,” Ardiles wrote in the UK’s Daily Mail. “He could never escape the similarities. They are both No. 10s, both the best players in the world, both left footed and both capable of magical, extraordinary moments.

“And yet they were very different in terms of personality. Diego was very forceful, charismatic and sometimes aggressive. Messi was almost timid and wouldn’t say much. People were always looking for a leader like Maradona and Messi wasn’t that person.”

However, that has certainly not always been the case in Qatar, especially during and after a tense quarterfinal against the Netherlands.

From cockily cupping his ears after rolling in his penalty in the shootout, to repeatedly shouting “idiot” at Netherlands player Wout Weghorst during his post-match interview, it was a side to Messi that many hadn’t seen before, in particular with the national team.
Perhaps, the weight being lifted at last year’s Copa América has unburdened and unleashed Messi in Qatar. Or perhaps, it’s just knowing that Sunday’s final will be the last chance he gets to achieve his lifelong dream with Argentina, but Messi has certainly played like a man on a mission at this World Cup.

Bauzá says it is largely different generations that hold either Messi or Maradona in higher regard.

“Maradona wasn’t just a magnificent, magnificent player, he was also a cultural icon and a cultural phenomenon,” he says. “Maradona was such a huge personality off the pitch as well and was so outspoken, so emotional, so close to his own people, so controversial as well, that for the people who actually lived through that era, watched alll his career, he left an indelible mark on them.

“Probably, if you ask them, they will tell you that Messi will never reach that because they feel like Messi was never probably as close to the people as Maradona was, they never got to see Messi on a pitch playing every weekend in Argentina, for example.

Reaction to Lionel Messi lifting the World Cup trophy wearing a bisht shows cultural fault lines of Qatar 2022

After 28 days, 64 games and 172 goals at Qatar 2022, Lionel Messi walked up on the podium at Lusail Stadium to finally get his hands on the World Cup trophy that had eluded him throughout his career.

Before joining his teammates, who were waiting for their captain in a hive of excitement on a nearby stage, Messi first shook hands with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Tamim then placed a black and gold bisht – a traditional item of clothing worn in the region for special events and celebrations – on the Argentina captain before the 35-year-old was handed the trophy.

In his new attire, which covered his national pale blue and white jersey, Messi danced towards his teammates before lifting the trophy above his head.

It was, for some, the perfect ending to a tournament that has been viewed by many as the best World Cup ever.

However, for others, it ruined the moment.

“Seems a shame in a way that they’ve covered up Messi in his Argentina shirt,” said former England international and presenter Gary Lineker on BBC’s live coverage of the final.

To others, it was one last attempt for Qatar to stamp its mark on the tournament – a criticism of the “sportswashing” (where critics accused Qatar of using the occasion to paper over its human rights record) that has underpinned much of the coverage of the tournament.

“Something a little strange about Messi being dressed in Bisht, that black cloak that the emir of Qatar dressed him in before lifting the World Cup,” New York Times journalist Tariq Panja tweeted.

“Qatar wants this to be its moment as much as it is Messi’s and Argentina’s.”

There was more criticism from other media, with British newspaper The Telegraph originally writing the headline “The bizarre act that ruined the greatest moment in World Cup history” in reference to Messi wearing the bisht.

It later changed the headline of the story to “Lionel Messi made to wear traditional Arab bisht for World Cup trophy lift.”

Messi didn’t wear the item of clothing for long, taking it off shortly after the trophy presentation and celebrating with his teammates in Argentina’s distinctive jersey.

Amid the criticism, Hassan Al Thawadi, Secretary General of the Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), an organization charged with organizing the World Cup, tried to explain the reasons behind the bisht.

“It is a dress for an official occasion and worn for celebrations. This was a celebration of Messi,” Al Thawadi told BBC Sport.

“The World Cup had the opportunity to showcase to the world our Arab and Muslim culture. This was not about Qatar, it was a regional celebration.

“People from different walks of life were able to come, experience what was happening here and get to understand that we may not see eye to eye on everything, but we can still celebrate together.”

‘Preconceived notions’
Others on social media were outraged by the criticism of the bisht, saying it was steeped in ignorance and misunderstanding of Qatar’s culture.

It was another example, they said, of the constant criticism the country has received since winning the right to host the tournament.

“Some are mad because Messi wore a bisht (it was gifted to him; a symbol of appreciation and respect in the Arab culture),” writer and columnist Reem Al-Harmi tweeted.

“However, I didn’t see the same level of anger and outrage when racism, Islamophobia, and orientalism was constantly used against the World Cup in Qatar.

“Instead of preconceived notions & judgmental views, turning this beautiful and meaningful photo into something that is not, read about the Arab bisht; its importance, and why/when it’s worn.

“Gifting someone a bisht, shows how significant/respectful they are, that’s Messi today.”

CNN reached out to FIFA for comment regarding the decision to use the bisht in the presentation ceremony.

Traditionally billions of viewers watch the World Cup, and as they concentrate on what is happening on the pitch, the names of some of the world’s biggest companies flash behind the players on a rolling, technicolored loop – Budweiser, Visa, Coca-Cola, Qatar Airways, Adidas, McDonalds, Wanda, Vivo, Hyundai Kia.

But Qatar 2022 is different. Many of these brands, particularly those with Western world roots, have become caught in the geopolitical crosshairs of this tournament, balancing their sponsorship with criticisms levelled at FIFA, soccer’s world governing body, and Qatar, the host, notably around human rights issues.

Not that it is affecting FIFA’s bottom line.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said on Friday at a news conference that the organization has earned a record $7.5 billion in revenue through commercial deals tied to the 2022 World Cup, $1 billion more than what it earned from the 2018 World Cup.

And during the next cycle building up to the 2026 World Cup held in the United States, Mexico and Canada, Infantino forecasts a revenue of $11 billion.

It is not just companies who have aligned their ‘brand’ to this World Cup.

Beckham’s brand is arguably as recognizable as many multinationals. As well as his ambassadorship with Qatar, Beckham has endorsements with Adidas, the Tudor watch brand and his own whiskey brand, Haig Club. Beckham is also part of the ownership team at MLS soccer club Inter Miami.

“I think when engaging in any form of commercial relationship, but certainly a sponsorship or an endorsement [or] an ambassadorial role, carries with it geopolitical risk,” Simon Chadwick, professor of sport and geopolitical economy at SKEMA Business School, tells CNN Sport.

‘Big global brands’
Ever since it was named in 2010 as the host nation of the 2022 World Cup, Qatar’s human rights record has been in the spotlight – from the death and conditions endured by migrant workers to LGBTQ and women’s rights.

Much of the criticism towards FIFA and Qatar has come from countries more able to freely do so, in Western Europe and North America, but only a fraction of the tournament’s sponsors are headquartered in these regions.

Brands associated with these countries, such as Adidas or McDonald’s, have consumer bases all around the world, encompassing consumers with varying freedoms to criticize human rights issues.

“When the marketing teams within these big global brands are looking at the split of their customer base, ethical consumers in Western Europe or in North America, as an example, only form a part of that. And they would have gone into the tournament knowing that,” Ben Peppi, head of sports services at JMW Solicitors, tells CNN Sport.

FIFA’s shift towards companies based outside of Western Europe and North America was accelerated by the exodus of some sponsors following the 2015 corruption scandal involving FIFA, but also reflects the globalization of Asian consumer brands, Peppi adds.

Wanda, a conglomerate based in China, Qatar Airways and Qatar Energy all belong to FIFA’s top tier of sponsors and are unlikely to be balancing the same brand perception dilemmas as their Western counterparts.

As Chadwick points out, Qatar Airways is state owned and “not going to start engaging in a consumer activism campaign against its own government.”

The four Chinese brands that sponsor the tournament – Wanda, Vivo, Mengniu Dairy and Hisense – are unlikely to take a particularly strident activist stance on an issue such as LGBTQ rights since that “turns a spotlight on China,” Chadwick adds.

‘A lot of sponsors have stayed very quiet’
Some brands, however, have addressed the human rights issues surrounding Qatar 2022. Denmark’s kit manufacturer Hummel provided the team with “toned down” kits in response to the alleged human rights violations that have occurred in Qatar, although FIFA later forbade the Danish national team from wearing these shirts at the World Cup.

Meanwhile, German supermarket chain Rewe ended its partnership with the German Football Association after FIFA’s decision to punish players wearing “OneLove” armbands that aimed to promote inclusivity.
But aside from these examples – notably taken by national team sponsors rather than tournament sponsors – companies have remained relatively quiet during this month-long competition, one of the biggest, most lucrative events in sport.

FIFA divides its tournament sponsors into three tiers – “partners” composed of Coca-Cola, Adidas, Visa, Wanda, Qatar Airways, Qatar Energy and Hyundai Kia; “World Cup sponsors,” including Budweiser, McDonald’s, Mengniu Dairy and Hisense; and “regional supporters.”

“The reality is, a lot of [FIFA’s partners] have stayed very quiet,” Peppi says.

“The FIFA World Cup is one of the most valuable pieces of intellectual property within sport, if not the most valuable and, as a result of that, is very tightly controlled and governed,” Peppi adds.

In July, three human rights organizations – Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Fair Square – wrote to FIFA’s 14 corporate partners and World Cup sponsors “urging them to call on the football body to remedy abuses of migrant workers linked to preparations for the World Cup.”

It is difficult to verify how many migrant workers have died as a result of work done on projects connected to the tournament.

The Guardian reported last year that 6,500 South Asian migrant workers have died in Qatar since the country was awarded the World Cup in 2010, most of whom were involved in low-wage, dangerous labor, often undertaken in extreme heat.
The report did not connect all 6,500 deaths with World Cup infrastructure projects and has not been independently verified by CNN.

In an interview with Piers Morgan, which aired on TalkTV in November, Hassan Al-Thawadi, Secretary General of the Supreme Committee, an organization charged with organizing the World Cup, said that between 400 and 500 migrant workers have died as a result of work done on projects connected to the tournament – a greater figure than Qatari officials have cited previously.

Al-Thawadi said in the same interview that three migrant workers had died in incidents directly connected with construction of World Cup stadiums, and 37 deaths were attributed to other reasons.

According to Amnesty, four sponsors – AB InBev/Budweiser, Adidas, Coca-Cola, and McDonald’s – stated their support for financial compensation to migrant workers and their families who suffered death or injury, wage theft or debt from illegal recruitment while preparing the tournament.

The other 10, Amnesty says, did not respond to written requests to discuss tournament-related abuses.
CNN has reached out to McDonald’s, Hyundai, Visa, Budweiser, Qatar Airways, Wanda and Vivo for comment as to how they balance these sponsorship campaigns in relation to the discussion of human rights’ issues surrounding Qatar 2022, but at the time of publication had not yet received a response.

However, Adidas told CNN that it had “been engaged with partners – including the Qatari government, the Supreme Committee for the delivery of the World Cup, the International Labor Organization (ILO), international human rights and labor advocacy groups, and trade unions – to improve the human rights situation. The progress achieved includes the establishment of an independent ILO office as a local monitoring body, strengthening the rights of migrant workers and a national minimum wage.”

Coca-Cola said in a statement to CNN that “it has played an instrumental role in the creation of the FIFA Human Rights Advisory Board, the first such entity created by a global sports governing body.”

“Today, we continue to work with FIFA and the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy to build on Qatar’s development of a regulatory and remedy framework for the protection of migrant worker rights…While these efforts have been groundbreaking, we recognize that more can be done to ensure respect for the human rights of all workers involved in the Qatar World Cup, including providing effective remedy to those who are unable to access avenues for redress.”

‘Now Beckham’s brand is not consumer brands’
Former England captain David Beckham is another ex-player who has performed an ambassadorial role for Qatar 2022. Beckham’s association with this World Cup was brutally put under the spotlight by British comedian Joe Lycett, who last month challenged the widely held assumption that the former England captain was an LGBTQ ally.
“Beckham was the commercialization of late 20th century sports personified. If he was doing then what he’s doing now, I would be concerned about the value of his brand but … now, he’s a sports entrepreneur, and his brand is not consumer brands,” Chadwick says.

“He’s trying to market himself to decision makers and financiers who are involved in elite professional sport around the world. What he’s interested in is making sure that his [Inter Miami] franchise in the United States is financially sustainable.”

Beckham’s spokesperson told CNN via a statement Friday that: “David has been involved in a number of World Cups and other major international tournaments both as a player and an ambassador and he’s always believed that sport has the power to be a force for good in the world.”

“We hope that these conversations will lead to greater understanding and empathy towards all people and that progress will be achieved.”

Some brands sponsoring the Qatar World Cup drape their logos in rainbow flags and run inclusive campaigns during Pride Month – when LGTBQ communities celebrate the freedom to be themselves – as a show of support towards LGBTQ people.

France and Argentina bring multiple plot lines to mouthwatering World Cup final
And just like that, after 62 matches over nearly a month, the stage for Qatar 2022’s showpiece final was set.

Two-time champion Argentina overpowered Croatia in the first semifinal earlier in the week, while defending champion France ended Morocco’s 2022 World Cup dream with a 2-0 win on Wednesday.

Attention now shifts to the Lusail Stadium, where this Sunday, Les Bleus will face La Albiceleste in a final that has multiple plot lines.

France is the first champion to reach the final in two decades, while Argentina is chasing a third title. Contesting a fourth final, Les Bleus is also attempting to become the first side to retain the World Cup since Brazil managed the feat 60 years ago.

According to FIFA’s most recent rankings, Argentina is No. 3, while France is No. 4.

Messi vs. Mbappé
The match provides one last chance for the 35-year-old Lionel Messi to fulfill his lifelong dream of guiding Argentina to its third title.

Standing in Messi’s way is his Paris Saint-Germain teammate Kylian Mbappé, as France seeks to win back-to-back World Cup trophies.

After a shock defeat by Saudi Arabia in its opening group game, Argentina’s World Cup campaign got off to the worst possible start.

However, Lionel Scaloni’s team regrouped and in the following five matches rediscovered the form that saw Argentina go on a 36-match unbeaten run before that defeat by Saudi Arabia.

And as so often before, the magical Messi has cast his spell over opposition teams at Qatar 2022, doing everything he has within his powers to ensure Argentina had the best chance possible to win a first World Cup title since 1986.

There was the touch and finish against Mexico in the group stages, the sublime pass to set up Argentina’s first goal against the Netherlands, and then a penalty and an assist that saw his country beat Croatia 3-0 in Tuesday’s semifinal.

On Sunday, Messi will have a final shot at winning – and lifting – the trophy, in front of some of the 40,000 Argentine fans estimated to have traveled to Qatar for this World Cup. Eight years ago, Messi and Argentina reached the final in the World Cup hosted by Brazil, but were beaten 1-0 by Germany.

When asked whether Sunday’s game will be his last at a World Cup, Messi replied: “Yes. Surely yes. There’s a lot of years until the next one and I don’t think I have it in me

“[I feel] a lot of happiness to be able to achieve this. To finish my World Cup career playing my last game in a final.

“Everything I’ve lived in this World Cup, what people experienced and how much the people back in Argentina are enjoying it all is very emotional,” he said.

Along the way Messi has been ably assisted by striker Julian Alvarez, who scored two of the three goals to overpower Croata in the semifinals, and midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

Goalkeeper Emi Martinez also further endeared himself to Argentine fans with two saves in the penalty shootout against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals, following his heroics in the Copa America semifinals against Colombia last year.

‘Savor the moment’
Mbappé, who is tied with Messi as this tournament’s top goalscorer, will be doing his very best to derail Argentina, with France looking to have the most complete team of the tournament.

Antoine Griezmann has provided much of France’s creative force, while also helping out defensively. The Atletico Madrid star was instrumental in France’s win against England, superbly crossing for Olivier Giroud to head home France’s winner in a 2-1 quarterfinal victory.

Like Griezmann, the 36-year-old Giroud has had a renaissance in this World Cup, after failing to score a single goal in 2018.

But at Qatar 2022, the AC Milan forward has scored four goals at the World Cup – only one behind Mbappé – and has become France’s all-time record goalscorer.

A World Cup winner with France as a player in 1998 and as Les Bleus’ coach in 2018, Deschamps said that he wants his players to savor their achievements at Qatar 2022.

“It’s been a month we’re together with the players. It’s never easy,” said Deschamps, per FIFA, after France’s win over Morocco.

“But it’s been such a joy until now, and that my players, the group has been compensated for this success. We’re going to go after the title on Sunday.

“We’re going to take the time. I tell this to my staff and players: ‘Take every moment in the day to really appreciate and savor the moment.’ In four days, we are going to play for a world title. We’ll enjoy it now and get ready for the last match of this World Cup.”

18:39 From ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ to beating the NFL’s GOAT: Meet new San Francisco 49ers quarter
From ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ to beating the NFL’s GOAT: Meet new San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy

One has played 331 regular season games and is widely regarded as the NFL’s greatest ever player. The other is making his first start in the league, having been the last player selected in the 2022 draft, earning himself the moniker, “Mr. Irrelevant.”

But, as they shake hands and exchange some words of encouragement, it is the rookie getting congratulated by the 45-year-old NFL great as “Mr. Irrelevant” revels in the win, having just made himself very relevant to the business of winning football games.

Brock Purdy, the seventh-round rookie from the 2022 NFL Draft, has just led his San Francisco 49ers to a dominant 35-7 victory over Tom Brady – childhood 49ers fan and California native – and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Although Brady has seven Super Bowl titles, countless accolades and an ever-growing list of records to his name, he was the one doling out compliments as the pair embraced.

“Good play, my man. You played great. Keep it up. Keep going,” said Brady, who was 22 years old when Purdy was born.

Whatever happens with the rest of Purdy’s NFL career, he’s already made a name for himself in the eyes of his high school coach Preston Jones – and in more ways than one.

“(My daughter) wanted to name the little bull calf, Cisco or Francisco,” Jones, Purdy’s coach at Perry High School in Arizona, told CNN Sport.

“And I said: ‘Hey, he may get cut, he may get traded. He may this, that or the other. Let’s come up with a different name.’

“And then we decided to turn him from a bull to a steer. And once you go from a bull to a steer, you become irrelevant.

“And so I said: ‘Hey, guys, ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ will forever be Brock’s name. And this bull is now a steer, so he’s irrelevant. So how about Mr. Irrelevant?’ And they thought that was pretty fitting. So we have a Mr. Irrelevant Texas Longhorn.”

‘He looked like he had some dog in him’
Purdy and Brady have more in common than you might think.

Both were unfancied by many NFL teams coming out of college. Leaving Iowa State, NFL scouts said Purdy had “field blinders occasionally robbing him of seeing the big play,” while “confidence and consistency have been issues” and his “delivery is labored.”

Those doubts about his game ensured Purdy slipped down the draft process before he was eventually selected as the 262nd overall – and final – pick by the 49ers.

In 2000, Brady was critiqued by scouts for having a “poor build,” lacking “great physical stature and strength” or a “really strong arm” and for being a “system-type player who can get exposed if he must ad-lib and do things on his own.”

Brady was chosen by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2000 Draft and was the 199th pick.

https://paste.cutelyst.org/vhpq7qvxQ

The rest is history – he might have entered the 2000 season as the Patriots’ backup, but almost a quarter of a century later, Brady is an NFL great.

When Purdy was selected by the 49ers – and that famous red and white jersey was brought out with “Mr. Irrelevant” and No. 262 daubed on the back – he found himself as the team’s third choice quarterback.

Despite being Iowa State’s all-time leader in wins – he set school career passing records with 81 passing touchdowns and 12,170 passing yards and earned second-team Academic All-American honors – Purdy fell behind Trey Lance, the No. 3 pick in the 2021 draft, and Jimmy Garoppolo, an experienced veteran traded from the Patriots in 2017, in the depth chart.

However, by a quirk of fate, Lance and Garoppolo both succumbed to injury.

Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2. Then, in Week 13, Garoppolo injured his foot playing against the Miami Dolphins, ruling him out for approximately two months and effectively ending his season.

For a team which holds Super Bowl aspirations, the injuries looked to have the potential to end the 49ers’ season early.

Step forward Purdy. He took to the field in the first quarter against the Miami Dolphins, showing no signs of nerves, leading the team to a 33-17 win, throwing for 210 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

Purdy’s unflappability without much preparation time with the starters earned him praise from his teammates, including from defensive end Nick Bosa.

“He looked like he had some dog in him. I love his mindset, he’s super tough,” the two-time Pro Bowler told reporters. “He’s not afraid to make mistakes. He gets playmakers the ball. He’s our guy now, we’ve got to roll.”

Jones remembers seeing Purdy’s competitiveness during his freshman year at Perry High School, calling him “crazy over-the-top competitive.”

“His competitiveness was No. 1. And No. 2, just his natural leadership and how he could get kids in his age group, he could be friends with them, but at the same time, he also was able to lead them unlike any other teenage boy that I’ve seen,” explained Jones, who called Purdy a “dream to coach.”

“To draw that line with friendship, most time those guys have a hard time getting friends to really buy in and especially in the athletic field, to do certain things that – maybe – that is not comfortable, that they may not want to do, but it’s for the best of the team, but he can get them to do that.”

The 49ers’ starting quarterback gig was Purdy’s for the rest of the season.

“You would think he’s been in the league 15 years,” 49ers left tackle Trent Williams told NFL Media. “If you’re talking, he’ll say: ‘Shut your a*s up.’

“He ain’t no timid rookie feeling his way around. He will get on your a*s. You would think he’s like Peyton Manning or something. Wide receivers not running, you’ll hear him cussing a wide receiver out.”

And with a week’s preparation, Purdy and the 49ers once again tore through an opponent, as the Bucs felt the full force of the former Cyclone’s wrath.

“He’s an impressive guy. He’s fun to be around. To play quarterback in this league, you’ve got to be very intelligent,” two-time All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey of the 49ers told reporters. “That’s one of the biggest things I’ve learned playing in my sixth year now.

“For a rookie to come in and process this offense and do everything by the book but then add his own flare to it is very impressive.”

For a player who was selected with the final pick of the draft, Purdy has already dramatically exceeded all expectations of him.
From irrelevancy to relevancy
The tag of ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ is a divisive one. True, it celebrates a player’s arrival in the league, but it also arguably damns them with faint praise.

The “Mr. Irrelevant” celebrations began in 1976, when former 49ers receiver Paul Salata founded “Irrelevant Week” in Newport Beach, California.

The player earns the dubious distinction of parading around town with the Lowsman Trophy, an ironic nod to the Heisman Trophy, which is given to college football’s top player annually.

Publicity surrounding “Mr. Irrelevant” peaked in 1979 when the Los Angeles Rams, who owned the second-to-last pick, tried to defer it to the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were picking last.

Both teams argued over who owned the rights to “Mr. Irrelevant” until the NFL’s league office stepped in to institute a rule banning the practice of passing on a pick to go last.

Purdy is just the seventh quarterback to ever be drafted at the position and, with his touchdown against the Dolphins, became the first “Mr. Irrelevant” to ever throw a touchdown pass in a regular season game.

While others might have been weighed down with the “Mr. Irrelevant” tag, Jones said he thinks it is almost fitting for the way Purdy has been so underappreciated during his career.

“He was extremely talented, extremely good, did everything you’re supposed to do and had crazy statistics but yet was under recruited,” Jones said. “He was kind of irrelevant in the recruiting world for colleges for a while.

“He goes to Iowa State and just kills it and lets everyone see, ‘Hey, I am right.’ And then it goes back now to the NFL.

“At the draft, he becomes irrelevant and he takes it and it’s just kind of how he’s always operated.”

Jones believes Purdy’s rise to prominence also raises questions about the way talent is scouted – both by colleges and NFL teams.

“People take too much stock in height, weight, speed, arm strength and they don’t take as much stock in that stuff that you can’t measure,” said Jones.

“The only people who really know how good he is at the work ethic, the preparation, the leadership, all the things that you can’t measure … are the guys who are in his locker room, the coaches he’s had, the players he’s had.

“These college guys recruiting him out of high school, they didn’t know that stuff. And then these NFL guys, they didn’t know that stuff. And so they’ve got to go with the measurables.

“And he ends up overcoming all those people’s second guesses and proves everybody wrong.”
Since 1994, 35 seventh-round quarterbacks have appeared in a regular-season game, according to the NFL, and only 26 of them have attempted more than five passes in their respective NFL careers. Purdy has already surpassed that mark.

“This kid has been a transformational figure really every stage of his life, quite honestly,” Purdy’s head coach at Iowa State, Matt Campbell, told the NFL.

“He has always been a guy where if he had a moment come, he’s been ready to capitalize on it.”

Campbell vividly remembers the moment when Purdy’s character really became evident to him, when he led an injury-plagued Iowa State to face Oklahoma State.
“Our senior QB who got hurt early in the season came up to me and said: ‘Coach, I think you got to play the freshman,’” Campbell recalls.

“If I play this freshman, we’re gonna have to be all in. But we put Brock in and he led back-to-back incredible drives, and we end up beating Oklahoma State [48-42] on the road.

“On the second touchdown he scores in the game, he pulls the ball, fakes a bubble screen and runs like 25 yards for a touchdown, and I remember saying on the headset: ‘I don’t know what’s going to happen, this kid’s going to win a ton of football games here.’ The kid is special.”

Counting out the 262nd pick of the NFL draft historically wouldn’t get you into trouble. But, as Jones has learned, never count out Purdy.

“I’ve tried to keep myself from being surprised about Brock Purdy years ago because nothing surprises me anymore with him.”

Defending champion France ends Morocco’s Qatar 2022 dream and reaches fourth World Cup final

Defending champion France ended Morocco’s 2022 World Cup dream on Wednesday thanks to a 2-0 victory at the Al Bayt Stadium.

Theo Hernández scored on five minutes with an acrobatic finish, with substitute Randal Kolo Muani tapping home late on as France reached its fourth World Cup final just four years after winning in Russia.

But Morocco, the first African team to reach the semifinal stage of the World Cup, can go home with its head held high after running France close before Kolo Muani’s decisive strike.

France is the first defending World Cup champion to reach the final in two decades. Lionel Messi and Argentina now await as France seeks to win back-to-back World Cup titles.

“Here we go again. It’s just an amazing feeling,” France captain Hugo Lloris said afterwards, per FIFA. “We suffered a lot, especially in the second half. We played too deep and they showed they’re not a team only focused on defending. They know how to attack. They deserve a lot of credit for this World Cup.

“Now the last step, the most difficult.”

Breaking of hearts
It felt like this semifinal was being played in Rabat or Casablanca rather than Al Khor, such was the support for Morocco.

Moroccan players were cheered like heroes every time they touched the ball, while their French counterparts were booed and whistled.

Not that France were flustered by the vociferous support for Morocco at the Al Bayt Stadium and it didn’t take long for Didier Deschamps’ team to take control of the match.

Antoine Griezmann – so brilliant in the quarterfinal win over England – took advantage of a slip from defender Jawad El Yamiq to break into the Morocco box, before crossing towards Kylian Mbappé.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward, twisting and turning in the box, had two efforts at goal blocked by despairing defenders, but the ball spun to Hernández, who acrobatically finished to give France an early advantage.

Remarkably, it was the first goal Morocco had conceded from an opposition player at the tournament and was the first time the team had trailed at Qatar 2022.

However, Morocco wasn’t flummoxed and minutes later Azzedine Ounahi drew a fine save from Hugo Lloris as the Atlas Lions grew into the match.

Olivier Giroud, who is joint-second goalscorer at the tournament behind Mbappé and Messi, missed two glorious opportunities for France to extend their lead.

First, his shot cannoned off the post as he broke towards the Morocco goal, before the AC Milan forward curled just wide shortly after Mbappé had been denied by Yassine Bounou.

Morocco’s riposte was El Yamiq’s brilliant bicycle kick, which came off the corner of the post, inches away from giving his country a route back into the semifinal.

After the break, it was one-way traffic, with Morocco pressing for an equalizer.

Countless times Morocoo played around a scrambling France defense, but between an errant touch or a last-ditch touch from a defender, the Atlas Lions couldn’t find an equalizer.

Morocco pushed and pushed, but to no avail and then Kolo Muani – just seconds after coming on as a substitute – tapped home a deflected effort to claim his first international goal and confirm France’s place in Sunday’s final.

Kolo Muani’s goal was the third-quickest goal for a substitute in World Cup history, the Eintracht Frankfurt forward scoring 44 seconds after coming on, according to Opta.

The goal seemingly took the air out of Morocco’s fans at the Al Bayt Stadium, though it continued to search for a miracle back into the game.

Having captured the hearts and minds of the footballing world, it was a sad end to Morocco’s aspirations. But having given reigning champion France a run for its money, Morocco leaves the competition knowing it has achieved more than just success on the pitch.
For France, an mouthwatering final against Argentina at Lusail Stadium on Sunday will see Mbappé face his PSG teammate, Messi, as the two nations clash to decide the 2022 world champion.

Argentina is chasing a third title, while Les Bleus is attempting to become the first side to retain the World Cup since Brazil managed the feat 60 years ago.

A World Cup winner with France as a player in 1998 and as Les Bleus’ coach in 2018, Deschamp said that he wants his players to savor their achievements at Qatar 2022.

“Obviously this was an important match. There will be one last one,” Deschamps said, per FIFA. “It’s been a month we’re together with the players. It’s never easy.

Argentina overpowers Croatia to reach World Cup final as Lionel Messi’s last dance dream remains alive

Lionel Messi’s lifelong dream of guiding Argentina to World Cup glory will remain alive until the last day of Qatar 2022, as La Albiceleste outclassed a weary-looking Croatia in a 3-0 victory in Tuesday’s semifinal.

Two first-half goals, the first a Messi penalty and the second a solo effort from Julian Alvarez, put Argentina in a commanding position at the interval, a position that Croatia never looked like recovering from.

Alvarez secured the victory with Argentina’s third goal in the second half following a wonderful Messi assist, providing the South American team and its 35-year-old captain with a chance to banish the demons of the 2014 final defeat, as well as securing the country’s first World Cup title since 1986.

Messi spent parts of the game feeling his left hamstring, though you wouldn’t have guessed he was in any discomfort by the way his mazy, twisting run bamboozled Joško Gvardiol, one of this tournament’s best defenders, to create Argentina’s third goal.

Messi’s near superhuman powers are undoubtedly dwindling as he plays into the twilight of his career, but the little magician still has the ability to deliver moments of genius just when his country needs him most.

His goal against Mexico in the group stages, the assist against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals and his overall performance in Tuesday’s semfinal have provided yet more memorable moments to a nation of 45 million people that consider him to be not far from a deity.

As many as 40,000 Argentina fans are estimated to have traveled to Qatar for this World Cup, according to the Argentine embassy in Qatar, and it sounded like all of them were inside the Lusail Stadium on Tuesday night.

As the clocked ticked deeper into injury time and the victory was beyond doubt, the Argentina bench and coaching staff began to join in with the rhythmic songs and chants that were being bellowed from the stands.

After the final whistle, the Argentina’s players stood in front of the huge wall of blue and white shirts and took in the adulation of their adoring fans.

It is almost impossible to believe that this is the same team that lost 2-1 to Saudi Arabia just three weeks ago in its opening group stage match – a performance so insipid and devoid of inspiration that it left some wondering whether Argentina would even make it out of the group.

Now, against either France or Morocco, Messi will have one final chance to lift the trophy he craves the most.

A date with destiny
In Messi and Croatia’s Luka Modrić, both captains have led their countries in losing World Cup finals and this would be the last chance for both to get their hands on football’s most coveted prize.

Neither side featured among the tournament favorites ahead of Qatar 2022, but Croatia stunned the world four years ago in reaching the final and did so once again in the previous round in Qatar, eliminating pre-tournament favorite Brazil on penalties in a display of sheer grit and determination.

Modrić, Croatia’s star player and a living legend in the small Balkan nation, is battle-hardened in the biggest matches and, alongside Mateo Kovacic and Marcelo Brozovic, has been part of arguably the best midfield in Qatar.

Argentina, similarly, has also improved as the tournament has gone on – though it was hardly able to get any worse after that stunning defeat to Saudi Arabia.

The team, which now seems to believe the sсript is written for Messi’s last dance to end in glory on Sunday, is almost unrecognizable from the one that took to the pitch that day.

Though Croatia started the match marginally the better of the two teams, these players had played as many minutes as were possible so far in Qatar, winning against Japan and Brazil on penalties following two energy-sapping spells of extra time.

Their tired legs seemed to show early on in the Lusail Stadium and even one mistake at this level is likely to prove costly.

That proved to be the case for Croatia as, surprisingly, Modrić of all people gave the ball away in midfield and Gvardiol failed to track Alvarez, leaving Dominik Livakovic – twice Croatia’s shootout in Qatar – exposed one-on-one against the Manchester City forward.

Alvarez poked the ball around Livakovic, whose outstretched leg brought the striker down and Messi made no mistake in converting the resulting penalty, smashing it high into the top corner.

That was Messi’s 11th World Cup goal, taking him past Gabriel Batistuta as Argentina’s all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup finals.

The match quickly looked as though it was getting away from Croatia as Alvarez made it 2-0 just five minutes later.

Borna Sosa’s poor cross into the box sparked an Argentina counterattack, with Alvarez running three-quarters of the length of the pitch and, after two fortuitous ricochets in the box, buried the ball past Livakovic.

Only a stunning reflex save from Livakovic prevented the score getting any worse for Croatia before half time, but it would take something extra special, even for a team that is used to conjuring footballing miracles, to come back from this one.

However, Croatia offered little going forward in the second half, a combination of weary attacking play and stout Argentine defending, and its stay of execution lasted until the 70th minute.

Messi picked up the ball deep and ran Gvardiol ragged, before finding Alvarez inside the box to send the Argentina fans inside the Lusail Stadium into raptures.

Argentina, written off by many as inferior to other World Cup contenders, wasn’t supposed to make it to the final match in Qatar, but a determined and single-minded Messi has helped ensure that it has.

Morocco becomes first ever African team to reach World Cup semifinals with historic victory over Portugal

Morocco made history Saturday as the first African team to reach a World Cup semifinal, defeating Portugal 1-0 to continue its sparkling run in Qatar.

Youssef En-Nesyri scored the game’s only goal, rising highest to head the ball into the net just minutes before halftime, while Morocco’s defense once again kept a clean sheet.

The Atlas Lions have become one of the stories of the tournament, holding fellow semifinalist Croatia to a draw in the group stage, and defeating Belgium, Spain and now Portugal on their way to a semifinal.

“Before it was just the Moroccans who supported us, now it is the Africans and Arabs,” manager Walid Regragui said before the quarterfinal, referencing the electric atmosphere that has accompanied his team at every game.

And the Al Thumama Stadium rang with cheers, drums and whistles on Saturday as if almost an entire continent and region were inside, witnessing their team make history.

Defeat for Portugal marked the end of what is likely to be Cristiano Ronaldo’s last World Cup as even he could not make a dent in the Morocco defense and was left in tears walking down the tunnel after the final whistle.

The Atlas Lions, meanwhile, launched Regragui into the air in their now trademark victory celebration.

The last time these two teams met, at the 2018 World Cup, Ronaldo scored the game’s only goal. This time around Ronaldo started on the bench for the second consecutive match.

Both teams began brightly, with Portugal dominating possession but unable to breakdown the well-organized Morocco defense which has conceded just one goal during Qatar 2022.

Two attempts from João Félix offered the only real Portuguese threat in the opening 30 minutes – the first, a powerful, accurate header forcing goalkeeper Yassine “Bono” Bounou into action and the second, a strike that deflected off two players, ricocheting wildly, but landing on top of the netting.

Instead, it was Morocco who got the breakthrough three minutes before halftime as Yahia Attiyat-Allah floated the ball perfectly into the box and En-Nesyri rose highest, far above goalkeeper Diogo Costa and Rúben Dias, to head it into the net.

Ronaldo entered the fray just after the break for his 196th international appearance, becoming the joint most-capped men’s player of all time.

But even he could not stamp his authority on the game as Portugal remained stranded outside the box for much of the second half, held in place by a defiant Moroccan defense.

Any shots that did make it past the front lines of defense were marshalled by Bounou who plucked a powerful Bruno Fernandes strike out of the air and minutes later tipped Felix’s effort over the crossbar with his outstretched hand.

As regular time ticked into eight minutes of stoppage time, Ronaldo also had a chance to equalize but his low shot was once again saved by Bounou.

Coaches, support staff and players from both sides tensely prowled the sidelines as the game opened up in its closing minutes.

Walid Cheddira was red carded for two yellow cards in as many minutes leaving his team to defend its slender lead with just 10 men for the last six minutes.

Zakaria Aboukhlal broke free on the counterattack and only had to round Costa to seal Morocco’s victory but was unable to do so, while Pepe’s header for Portugal in front of the goal glanced just wide.

From bloody Balkan war to World Cup heavyweight: the making of Croatia as a soccer nation

Panama, Mauritania, Georgia and Eritrea are four countries with roughly the equivalent population sizes of Croatia.

Those four nations share one World Cup appearance between them and that was when Panama played at Russia 2018, finishing the group stage with three defeats and conceding 11 goals.

Croatia’s World Cup pedigree is an altogether different story. In six World Cup appearances, the country has reached the semifinals on three occasions, while four years ago Croatia contested the final, ultimately losing to France.

Croatia only gained independence in 1991, during the bloody Balkan war which lasted until 1995 and its population is just under four million, though you’d never have known given the way it traded blows with soccer superpower Brazil in the quarterfinals, before winning a penalty shootout.

That success was very much a case of David knocking out Goliath given Brazil’s population is 214 million people.

Next up for Croatia is Lionel Messi and Argentina – population: 45 million.

Igor Štimac, who played in all of Croatia’s 1998 World Cup matches during its run to third place, told CNN that the country’s recent history has helped play a part in forging elite competitors.

“Our people went through many difficulties in its survival, in its independence, fighting for it, in the aggression which we suffered from our neighbors,” Štimac, who coached the Croatia national team between 2012-13, told CNN.

“These things are helping to stay with a great mental strength, great discipline, staying humble and surviving with the pride, whatever difficulties there are in front of us.
“But we cannot say that only the last war which happened here helped in these things because the wars were going on through this region for many occasions. It’s something also about this region in regards to the climate, in regards to the culture.”

Croatian football journalist Srđan Fabijanac, who has been on the ground in Doha to watch this current iteration of the national team, says the squad’s harmony has proved vital in another extraordinary World Cup for the the Vatreni (the ‘Blazers’)

Fabijanac calls the team – constructed with a blend of experience from the likes of Luka Modrić, Ivan Perišić and Dejan Lovren with new faces such as Joško Gvardiol and Borna Sosa – as like a “family.”

“You’ve seen what’s happened in this World Cup; Brazil have excellent players, Portugal have excellent players, Germany have excellent players but in my opinion, they have spirit and they don’t have a team,” Fabijanac told CNN. “That’s the problem. Croatia is too strong as a team.”
From the rubble
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, democratic movements swept across much of Eastern Europe, including Yugoslavia. With the election of non-communist governments in four of Yugoslavia’s six republics, the Federation began to crumble and ethnic divisions resurfaced.

By 1991, the prosperous Croatian republic sought to create a loose confederation or to dissolve the union entirely. Less wealthy Serbia opposed this. In June of 1991, Slovenia and Croatia declared independence.

Fighting soon began as the Yugoslav army, consisting primarily of Serbs, tried to prevent Slovenia from establishing its own border posts. In July, fighting also broke out between Croatian forces and Serb militiamen.

Among the other republics, only the smallest – Montenegro – sided with Serbia. The two remaining republics, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia, voted in favor of independence.

In 1992, the Serbian minority in Bosnia, helped by the federal army, attempted to carve out enclaves for itself, laying siege to Sarajevo.

By the time the United Nations dismissed Yugoslavia from its General Assembly, some 20,000 people had died and up to two million had become refugees from fighting and “ethnic cleansing.”

Back in 2018, Lovren recounted his memories of his escape as a young child from war-torn Bosnia in 1992.

“I just remember when the sirens went on,” Lovren said. “I was so scared because I was thinking ‘bombs’ or that something will happen now.

“I remember my mum took me and we went to the basement, I don’t know how long we’d been sitting there, I think it was until the sirens went off. Afterwards, I remember mum, my uncle, my uncle’s wife, we took the car and then we were driving to Germany.”

Lovren’s family settled in Germany, but after seven years they were told to leave and had to start life again in Croatia.

Fabijanac admits while some of the squad were not even born during the bloody Balkan war, it is something which still hangs over the country, spurring its players on.

“We want to put the things which happened in the 1990s far from us,” he explained. “There are sports, but we have very strong national emotions and this … is why the Croatian football players always play with the full heart for the national teams.

“Because we are a small country, we have a very, very ugly war which made many traumas for many people in Croatia.

“And sports and players in football and in other sports are national heroes. And that is the reason why they always play for the national teams one level higher than the highest. When we play for the national team in football, in any sport, we play with more than 100%, we play with 110%.

“They put their last atomic force on the field to do something for the country.”
A new story
The Croatian Football Association applied and gained admittance to soccer’s world governing body FIFA, in 1992 and Europe’s governing body UEFA in 1993.

“We have football in the blood. Every male child in Croatia wants to be a football player,” Fabijanac said. “First they learn how to walk, after that they take a football or something to play football.”

Fabijanac added: “For a small country like us, it’s very important to have this fantastic national team because my granddaughter is three years old and she doesn’t play with dolls, she plays with the ball and says only: ’ Modrić, Modrić, Modrić.’ That’s something which is amazing.”

It didn’t take long for Croatia to make its mark on the international soccer stage.

First, Croatia reached the quarterfinals of the 1996 Euros – beating a star-studded Denmark along the way.

Two years later, in its first ever World Cup appearance, Croatia got to the semifinals of the 1998 edition in France, eventually finishing third.

Thanks to its first golden generation of players – led by Davor Šuker and with Robert Prosinečki and Zvonimir Boban adding a sprinkling off stardust – Croatia qualified with two wins from its group, then beating Romania and Germany in the knockout stages, before losing out to eventual-winners France in the semifinals.

Šuker finished as the 1998 tournament’s top scorer and with its distinctive red and white kit as well as its propensity for shocking football’s traditional heavyweights, Croatia became an immediate favorite for neutrals.

Štimac said that his former teammates and squad had the responsibility of laying down the foundations for Croatia’s modern soccer heritage.

“Our generation was the one that we had the most difficult path because we were responsible to create a cult of Croatian culture in football and to make the road for the generations to come,” Štimac told CNN.

“And as a newly recognized country, it was obviously very difficult when you are such a small country in the football world and nobody appreciates to consider you at all as important part or subject.

“And from that point of view, we had the most difficult situation and we did well and that’s obviously helped generations which followed.”

The arrival of Zlatko Dalić as Croatia’s coach in 2017 has also proved pivotal.

Having been appointed after the team’s qualification for the 2018 World Cup, Dalić came with pressure on his shoulders.

With many of the team’s star players in their prime – in particular, the midfielder three of Modrić, Ivan Rakitić and Marcelo Brozović – Croatia was expected to perform well.

Croatia did better than just perform well.

Thanks to the harmony Dalić was able to engender in the team, Croatia exceeded everyone’s expectations by reaching the final – showing remarkable grit and resilience to win twice on penalties followed by an extra-time victory over England in the semifinals – before being overpowered by France in the final.

Returning to Croatia and a hero’s welcome, with more than 500,000 fans turning Zagreb’s streets into a tapestry of red and white to celebrate the players’ success, the team was feted for surpassing the so-called “bronze” generation of 1998.

“In the past, we also had very good teams. In 1998, we had much better players maybe in the time like Boban, Šuker, Prosinečki, (Robert) Jarni, but maybe they don’t share the chemistry between them to do what this team has done in the past few years,” said Fabijanac.

“We only have one star, it’s Luka Modrić. The other players are not stars, like Kylian Mbappé or Cristiano Ronaldo or Neymar. But the rest of the team is a family and does the most important thing for us.

“When Dalić came to be head coach, when he chose the team … he looked for characters.”

With Modrić at his magical best and goalkeper Dominik Livaković in imperious form and with the team able to seemingly pluck a goal out of thin air when needed, this Croatia side has continued to surprise, just like it did four years ago.

“When we come to represent the national team, all the egos need to disappear,” said Stimac.
“There is no place in the national team dressing room of Croatia for big egos, and everyone knows that. No one is bigger than the team, no one is bigger than the manager and that’s what is taking us forward.”

Back in 1998, Štimac came off the bench to face Argentina and the likes of Gabriel Batistuta and Juan Sebastián Verón.

On Tuesday, Croatia will meet Lionel Messi and the next generation of Argentine stars knowing two wins stand between them and a new age of glory.

$480,000-per-week yacht plays host to super rich at Qatar 2022

It’s been dubbed the ‘Arabian Riviera,’ where the streets are immaculate and are interspersed with luxury hotels offering shimmering views across the marina. Welcome to ‘The Pearl.’

Work on this artificial island – now one of Doha’s most exclusive areas – started in 2004 and was named after the traditional practice of pearl diving which was a dominant industry in the area before the discovery of oil.

People dressed in designer clothing walk their chi-chi dogs along the promenade while others relax on man-made beaches which sit near to a harbor resplendent with shining yachts.

Many of the boats have a permanent mooring in the area but some have arrived to provide luxurious accommodation to soccer fans looking for the ultimate World Cup experience

The Saluzi, notable for the striking graffiti style design adorning its side, is one such superyacht.

It arrived in Doha on November 24 and its army of 35 staff was busy getting ready for their first, confidential, booking of the tournament as CNN was invited on board for a tour.

A stay on the Saluzi costs nearly $500,000 per week and as soon as you step on board, you are enveloped by luxury.

Guests are invited to swap their shoes for white fluffy slippers and are greeted with a drink by the immaculately dressed staff who are on hand to tend to clients and ensure they’re happy.

From jacuzzis to self-playing pianos, this is a floating space with three floors to sleep, play and work across.
Many of the outdoor areas have hot tubs and guests can even play golf at the back of the boat – there is pitching green for keen golfers, which comes complete with decomposing balls that turn into fish food when they hit the water.

There are also diving instructors, swimming pools and poker tables – you’ll never be bored on the Saluzi.

“We can accommodate 32 guests but we are rarely full,” the Saluzi’s captain Asparuh Chorbadzhiev told CNN.

“When the people like privacy, they may only use one or two cabins, but they can also bring with them a lot of supporting staff.”

Chorbadzhiev, who has been working and living at sea for almost 40 years, won’t reveal who will be staying on the boat during Qatar 2022 but said his guests are often celebrities or very wealthy business people.

The captain is clearly proud of the ‘Saluzi’ and was keen to show off its many hidden secrets; from its novelty lamps which guests turn on and off with a remote control device, which is shaped like a gun, to the artwork which adorns the entrance walls.

The distinctive paintings inside the yacht match the imagery on the outside. All the designs are inspired by the yacht’s name, which is derived from the legendary Chinese war horse.

From golf to poker tables
A fully equipped gym sits opposite a luxury spa, complete with a massage bed which has the ability to drip wine on your body as you relax. This yacht even has a hair salon.

A total of 16 cabins are available on the Saluzi, with its VIP rooms equipped with a balcony. There is also a study, a cinema room and an area for gastronomic dining. The boat has also been known to host karaoke parties, according to Chorbadzhiev.

All the meals are prepared by the crew. The yacht is also spotlessly clean. You leave one room and a team of people suddenly appears to rearrange it back to its pristine condition.

“It’s a global yacht. It’s usually in the Mediterranean every summer,” Chorbadzhiev said.

“Then, in the winter, we can go to the Far East or places including the Seychelles, Maldives, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong or in the Gulf region like here.”

The yacht had recently been in Abu Dhabi for the Formula One grand prix, but was delayed in getting to Qatar due to reams of paperwork needed to obtain a visa to enter the country, according to Chorbadzhiev.

Superyachts vs. tents vs. portacabins
While moored in Abu Dhabi for the grand prix, the yacht played hosted people watching the race from its decks which looked over a portion of the track.

Now in Doha, guests can organize limousines ferrying them to World Cup stadiums for the tournament’s games. Guests can also request to take the yacht out of the marina to view the city from afar.

According to BOAT Pro’s Global Fleet Tracker, more than 20 superyachts have entered Qatari waters since the start of the tournament, including vessels such as Al Lusail and Alaiya, which are moored around Doha.

A superyacht World Cup stay offers something very different from some of the other accommodation available to guests in the city during the tournament.

From tents in the desert to portacabins on the edge of Doha, World Cup organizers have had to be innovative in providing accommodation options to fans with the influx of an estimated 1.5 million people staying in a nation smaller than Connecticut.

'It's getting dark': 'Good Night Oppy' recounts the sudden death of a Mars rover

In the opening scenes of the new film "Good Night Oppy," the Opportunity rover rolls along through Perseverance Valley on Mars in June 2018, as "Roam" by The B-52s fills the room at mission control.
The peppy tune was the rover's wake-up song, played at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. In the same way NASA has used a song to wake up astronauts each day they spend in space since the 1960s, the Opportunity rover team began their daily shifts with a song that set the mood for "Oppy's" journey.

Oppy had weathered dust storms before, along with solar flares, sand traps, cosmic rays, near collisions and harsh Martian winters for more than a decade while exploring the red planet. In 2018, however, her team was able to recognize the signs of "gray hairs" — a failing memory, the desire to nap, arthritis in the robotic arm.
Mission team members still thought of her as their lucky rover, though — invincible. After all, Oppy was designed for a 90-day mission, but she had exceeded all expectations and outlived her twin sister, Spirit, by some seven years.
This storm was different. It rapidly grew in size, encircling the planet and blocking out the sun.
The solar-powered rover's last message to mission control translated to this: "My battery is low and it's getting dark."
This chapter is just the beginning of the documentary, available to stream on Amazon Prime on November 23. The film traces the journey of the twin rovers and the people who dedicated their lives to them from concept to that last transmission.
The film shines a light on the hope of space exploration and captures the emotional attachment between humans and the robotic ambassadors that explore on our behalf.
Director Ryan White has woven together decades of footage from the NASA vaults with photorealistic effects and animation from Industrial Light & Magic, the famed visual effects company founded by George Lucas, and narration from actor Angela Bassett. The documentary places the viewer on Mars along with the two rovers as they roam on opposite sides of the red planet.
"Even though the spacecraft was robotic, the mission was human," said Doug Ellison, engineering camera team lead for the Curiosity Rover at JPL, who also worked on Opportunity's mission.
Twin robots
As NASA engineers built and tested the twin rovers in the early 2000s, they quickly realized the robots couldn't be more different. Spirit was the headstrong drama queen while Opportunity was the overachiever, according to team members. Spirit was stubborn and struggled through the same tests that Opportunity breezed through. Their personalities seemed as human as their design.
The rovers were built to search for past evidence of water on Mars. Both launched in 2003 inside protective shells aboard Delta rockets and landed in 2004 on opposite sides of the red planet. The dual mission's first 90 days came and went, and the JPL team realized the two rovers were ready for more adventure.

Together, Spirit and Opportunity's findings would rewrite the textbooks with new information about the red planet and its intriguing, watery past — and they both got into all sorts of trouble in between discoveries, like getting stuck in the sand and nearly careening down the sides of steep craters.
The bonds between team members and the rovers quickly deepened, despite the vast distance between Earth and Mars — making it all the more difficult when Spirit's journey ended in 2011 and Opportunity fell silent in 2018. There was hope for both rovers to "wake up" until the bitter end.

"The way that the (Opportunity) mission ended was very sudden," Ellison told CNN. "We had a very happy and healthy rover one week, and then this dust storm came along and took it all away. ... You can call it a death in the family. It was very sudden, it was very traumatic. And getting to revisit it was really kind of emotionally rewarding."
This is the Opportunity rover's final photo of Mars
Thousands of people had worked on every aspect of the rovers, bringing them to life and keeping them rolling on Mars longer than anyone expected.
"What we're really saying goodbye to is the teamwork that is focused through this robot and getting to work with a whole bunch of amazing people," Ellison said.
Bringing 'Oppy' to life
The creative process behind the film began in March 2020 on the eve of the pandemic.
A self-professed "space geek," White grew up in the 1980s and followed space missions. The project became his "lifesaver, getting to work on something so joyful during such a dark time," he said.
Industrial Light & Magic took up the task of bringing Mars to life in a way that had never been seen on film before. Shot by shot, ILM team members worked with NASA to confirm what they depicted was accurate to the rovers' experience.
The end result is as close as viewers may get to standing on the surface of Mars, with camera angles that feel like they were filmed on the red planet itself.
"ILM really taught us that you can do that within the constraints of reality: through lensing, and lighting, and through the angle on the robot's cameras, which were her eyes," White said.

Spirit and Oppy's missions have ended, but Mars exploration continues today through next-generation rovers like Curiosity and Perseverance. The latter launched in July 2020 as White was working on the documentary.
The first Martian samples collected by Perseverance will make their way to Earth in the 2030s, and may contain evidence of life — if it ever existed on the red planet.
"All of these missions, as a cadence, are the precursor for sending humans there to carry on that adventure in the future," Ellison said. "I hope that the next generation of engineers and explorers, people like my little 4-year-old girl, can see documentaries like this and go, 'I want to do some of that, too. I want to be a part of an adventure like that.'"
Add to queue: More on Mars
Watch: "The Mars Generation" (2017)
Aspiring teenage astronauts explore the curriculum at NASA's Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, as they chase dreams of traveling to Mars one day. Experts also weigh in on NASA's history and future and the practicality of colonizing another planet, revealing the first human journey to Mars is closer than you might think.
Watch: "The Martian" (2015)
Based on the novel by Andy Weir, the optimistic sci-fi film by Ridley Scott follows a stranded astronaut who must find clever ways to survive on barren Mars with only a few supplies and no way to contact Earth.
Watch: "The Expanse" (2015-2022)
Set in a future in which much of the solar system has been colonized by humanity, the six-season television series (and a book series of nine novels by James S.A. Corey) follows a hardened detective and a rogue ship's captain who investigate the case of a missing young woman. Racing across the planets, they uncover secrets about their unusual living circumstances.
Read: "Roving Mars: Spirit, Opportunity and the Exploration of the Red Planet" (2005)
Perseverance rover finds organic matter 'treasure' on Mars
Steven Squyres, mission manager for the Mars Exploration Rover Project, shares the story behind the landing of the twin rovers in 2004. With the many setbacks in the mission's early start, and the race against the clock to finish building the two rovers before launch, Squyres gives readers a front-row seat and his expert insights on the rovers' first findings.
Watch: "Apollo 11: First Steps Edition" (2019)
Released 50 years after NASA's Apollo 11 mission, this critically acclaimed documentary breaks down the final moments of preparation in 1969 leading up to the landing of the first human on the moon. With current Artemis missions set to land the first woman and first person of color on the moon in the coming decade, NASA hopes further lunar discovery will eventually lead to the first human setting foot on Mars, making the findings from the historic Apollo 11 mission more important than ever.
Taylor Nicioli contributed to this story.

Top image: Visual effects artists working on the film studied how Martian sand moves in the wind, how light diffuses through the thin Martian atmosphere, and what it looks like on the planet's surface at sunrise and sunset.

World Cup champion France edges out England to reach semifinals as Harry Kane misses penalty
World Cup holder France remains on course in its title defense after beating England 2-1 to reach the semifinals at Qatar 2022.

Aurélien Tchouaméni gave France a first-half lead, his powerful shot setting the game ablaze at the Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday.
England grew into the game and team captain Harry Kane emphatically converted from the penalty spot to draw the 2018 semifinalists level. The goal was his 53rd for his country, drawing him level with Wayne Rooney as England’s all-time top scorer.

With just over 10 minutes remaining, Olivier Giroud’s header gave the reigning champion the lead once again, with Kane skying a late penalty as France was able to hold onto victory.

France will face Morocco in the semifinals on Wednesday after it beat Portugal earlier in the day to become the first ever team from Africa to reach this stage of the World Cup.

The French victory ensured Didier Deschamps’ team is the first defending champion to have progressed past the quarterfinals this century.

Giroud called France’s performance “amazing.”

“At the end of the game on our last chances, we knew how to be dangerous. I knew I was going to have another chance and Grizi gave me a great pass,” Giroud told the French Football Federation’s website, referring to Antoine Griezmann, who set up France’s winning goal with a superb cross.

“Tonight, it was a great match, we know the talent of this young English generation, we made a very solid match, we tried to be powerful in our counterattacks.”

A clash of titans
It was a match between two out of the final four teams at the 2018 World Cup, with both nations seen as heavyweight contenders to win the Qatar 2022 title.

And even in the early exchanges, the magnitude of the moment was evident, as the two teams tested each other out.

The first real chance of the game came just after the 10-minute mark, when Giroud directed a cross straight into the grateful arms of Jordan Pickford in England’s goal.

The breakthrough for the French wasn’t without controversy.

England winger Bukayo Saka was left on the floor after a tackle from France defender Dayot Upamecano, although Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio turned away English protests claiming a foul.

And, after a swift counterattack involving Kylian Mbappé, England was punished as a bullet of a strike from Tchouaméni – his first World Cup goal – from outside the box nestled in the bottom corner to give France the lead.

Minutes later, England players were once again pleading with Sampaio for a decision in their favor after Upamecano and Kane tangled legs on the edge of the French penalty box.

After a brief deliberation with the video assistant referee (VAR), those pleas were dismissed and the game continued.

Chances were few and far between in the remainder of the first half, with Kane coming closest, his close-range shot saved by his Tottenham Hotspur teammate Hugo Lloris in the France goal.

Immediately after the second half, England came out firing, with Jude Bellingham’s powerful effort from the edge of the box tipped over by Lloris.

The pressure eventually told as Saka was fouled by Tchouaméni and the referee pointed to the penalty spot, giving England the perfect opportunity to draw level.

Kane emphatically took advantage, powering the ball into the corner of the France goal, in doing so becoming England’s joint top scorer alongside former Manchester United forward Rooney.

Almost immediately from the restart, France almost reclaimed the lead, but Adrien Rabiot’s first-time effort from the edge of the box was palmed away by Pickford.

England looked the most likely to score, with a header from Harry Maguire glancing off the post as Gareth Southgate’s side turned up the pressure.

Against the run of play, France retook the lead through its all-time top scorer, Giroud heading home his fourth goal of the tournament to give France the lead again with just over 10 minutes remaining.

England had a golden chance to draw level for a second time after Theo Hernández was adjudged to have fouled Mason Mount, Sampaio awarding a second penalty after reviewing the incident with the help of VAR.

This time, however, Kane blazed his effort over the bar.

Despite consistent pressure, England was unable to find a late equalizer, with Marcus Rashford’s freekick in the game’s final moments landing on the roof of the net.

And, as the referee’s final whistle went, the French players gathered in a celebratory huddle as Kane sank to his haunches in desperation.

England manager Gareth Southgate said his team’s performance “deserved better” but “in the end goals are decisive.”

“I said to the players I didn’t think they could given any more,” Southgate told ITV. “Fine margins have decided the game, the way we’ve progressed this tournament has been excellent.

“France know they’ve been in a hell of a game. We win together and lose together. We’ve let a couple of goals in and missed a couple of chances. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the goals (Kane) has scored for us.”
Asked after the final whistle if the defeat felt like England had a missed an opportunity to progress at Qatar 2022, England midfielder Jordan Henderson told ITV: “Probably yeah, because we felt really good, performances were really good.

“The focus and the hunger was good every single day, but unfortunately, it wasn’t our night. You gotta give credit to France, they’re a good team, but I still felt it was there for us to win tonight.”

Henderson added: “Straight after the game, it’s difficult to find the right words. I thought we gave everything in the game.

“You know, disappointed to go one – nil down, but I thought the character and the mentality to keep going in the second half and find the equalizer … We gave everything and unfortunately it wasn’t our night.”

Tournament favorite Brazil out of World Cup after losing to Croatia on penalties

Brazil, the favorite to win this year’s World Cup, is out of Qatar 2022 after losing to Croatia on penalties 1-1 (4-2) in Friday’s dramatic quarterfinal.

It had looked as though Neymar had won it for Brazil after he scored a stunning solo goal in extra-time – tying Pele’s international scoring record for the Seleção with his 77th goal – but Bruno Petković broke Brazilian hearts with a last-gasp equalizer to send the game to penalties.

It was Croatia’s goalkeeper Dominik Livaković who was the hero yet again in the shootout, saving Rodrygo’s first effort before defender Marquinhos saw his attempt hit the post which sent Croatia through to the semifinals. Livaković also saved three penalties in his side’s victory against Japan in the previous round.
“Definitely something special against the favorite,” Croatia defender Dejan Lovren told reporters after the match.

“We said in the last half of the last 15 minutes, don’t stop believing. Everyone said that and we knew it. We knew we would come back no matter how hard it was in some moments.”

It was dizzying end to another remarkable game in Qatar which took until extra-time to really get going.

After it dazzling display against South Korea in the round of 16, Brazil was taken into the trenches by Croatia.

The game was largely reduced to scrappy half chances and resolute defending as Livaković saved twice from Neymar to keep the scores level in the second half.

With neither side able to find the breakthrough, the match went into extra-time which automatically favored Croatia.

Another Croatia shock
At the World Cup in 2018, Zlatko Dalić’s team won three knockout rounds after forcing the game into extra-time and it beat Japan on penalties in the previous round in Qatar.

But it looked as though Neymar had upset that particular sсript when he produced arguably the moment of the tournament so far.

The star attacker dropped deep to pick up the ball before splitting the Croatian defense with two bounce passes with teammates before firing his effort into the roof of the net.

The goal sparked frenzied celebration inside the Education City Stadium with Neymar close to tears after seemingly inspiring his side into the semifinals.

But football can be cruel and Croatia never gave up.

In the 116th minute, Petković stunned Brazil by sweeping home the equalizer and forcing the game into penalties with his side’s first shot on target.

Despite being captain and his team’s star player, Neymar did not take a penalty with Croatia – which has now won four World Cup shootouts – scoring all of its efforts before Brazil could even take its fifth.

Croatia, the beaten finalists in 2018, will now face either Argentina or the Netherlands for a place in the World Cup final, while Brazil will be left to come to terms with another missed opportunity.

Brazilian fans looked stunned at the full-time whistle while tears flowed from the players on the pitch.

Another upset
It’s already been a World Cup of upsets and this was another to add to the list.

Brazil was the top-ranked team at the World Cup and possessed an incredible array of talent, with the likes of Neymar and Vinícius Jr. lighting up the tournament.

But it faced a Croatia side which, despite not impressing so far in Qatar, knows how to win knockout matches.

With a population of less than four million people, Croatia has overachieved in recent years and midfield maestro Luka Modrić has been at the heart of it.

The 37-year-old was yet again at the center of Croatia’s performance against Brazil, pulling the strings in midfield and keeping his side ticking over against opponents with far more quality.

“We are really special,” Lovren added.

“We never surrendered. Never keeping our head down. We are a really a small country but today we showed that we are big.”
