The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-20 on Saturday to advance to the AFC championship game but there is now concern over the fitness of Patrick Mahomes.
The Chiefs’ star quarterback was brought down by Jaguars’ Arden Key and Corey Peters in the first quarter and replays showed Mahomes’ ankle getting caught awkwardly under Key as both men fell to the ground.
Mahomes instantly reached for his right ankle and was seen limping to the sidelines to speak to his team’s coaches before hobbling back onto the field.
“Obviously, I have a lot of adrenaline going right now, so we’ll see how it feels,” Mahomes told reporters.
“But I’ll hop right in the treatment tonight and try to do whatever I can to be as close to 100 percent by next week.
“Luckily for us, we played the early game on Saturday, so we get an extra almost half a day that I can let that ankle rest.”

Despite his injury, the 27-year-old stayed in the game for the rest of the first quarter but he was in obvious discomfort.
In the second quarter, with his ankle taped up, Mahomes appeared to get into a heated discussion with head coach Andy Reid and threw his jacket down as he headed to the locker room for evaluation.
Chad Henne took over at quarterback and went on to lead the Chiefs to a touchdown to take a 17-7 lead.
Despite the team listing him as questionable to return, Mahomes came back in the second half and led the team to the victory, ending the night with 195 yards passing and two touchdowns.
“I didn’t want to go get the X-Rays or whatever it was. I just wanted to continue to play,” Mahomes added, explaining his argument with Reid.
“I told them I’d do it at halftime but the coach, in the best interest of me, made me go back there and get that X-Ray before coming back into the game.
“For a while, I thought I could play through it but he said he would not put me back in ‘so might as well go get that X-Ray and if it’s negative or whatever I’ll put you back in.’
“I ran back there, got the X-Ray and was able to play and finish the game.”
‘He’s a tough kid’
The Chiefs have now reached the AFC Championship game for the fifth consecutive year but there are now doubts about Mahomes’ ability to play on January 29.
Their opponent will be either the Cincinnati Bengals or the Buffalo Bills, with both teams set to play later on Sunday.
“He’s a tough kid. He wanted to be in there,” Reid told reporters when asked about Mahomes, not committing to him playing next Sunday.
“He wanted to be competing and that’s a tribute to him and his competitiveness.
“However, you got to make sure he’s okay, physically okay, where he can protect himself and if he can’t then he can’t play.
“You have to go to the next guy. He’s a tough nut and, when I tell you he is competitive, he’s very very competitive.”
Eagles beat Giants
Elsewhere, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New York Giants 38-7 to advance to the team’s eighth NFC championship game in franchise history and the first since 2018.
The Eagles came out of the gates strong and finished even stronger.
Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts threw for 154 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing touchdown as well. Eagles running backs Miles Sanders and Kenneth Gainwell combined to rush for 202 yards.
The Eagles will face either the Dallas Cowboys or the San Francisco 49ers on January 29 for a place in the Super Bowl final on February 12.
Coco Gauff in tears as she faces up to Australian Open loss
Coco Gauff broke down in tears after her straight sets defeat in the fourth round of the Australian Open on Sunday, while fellow American Jessica Pegula progressed to the quarterfinals.
The 18-year-old Gauff lost 7-5 6-3 to Latvian Jelena Ostapenko on Margaret Court Arena and could not hide her disappointment when talking to reporters about the match afterwards.
Asked to explain her frustrations, a tearful Gauff said: “I think it’s because I worked really hard and I felt really good coming into the tournament and I still feel good. I still feel like I’ve improved a lot.
“But when you play a player like her and she plays really well, it’s like there’s nothing you can do.
“So it’s a little bit frustrating on that part.”
Gauff was the seventh seed in Melbourne and had started the season promisingly, winning the ASB Classic in Auckland earlier this month for the third WTA singes title of her career.
But Ostapenko held firm when it mattered, saving seven of the eight break points she faced, while taking all three of her chances on Gauff’s serve.
“I think every loss is somewhat in my control because I do feel like I’m a good player, but today she just played better,” Gauff added, per Reuters.

“There were moments in the match where I was getting frustrated because I normally can problem solve but today I feel like I didn’t have much answers to what she was doing.
“There were balls I was hitting deep and she was hitting them on the line and hitting them back deep, like, over and over again. It’s just one of those days that just didn’t go my way and went her way.”
Ostapenko is through to the quarterfinals for the first time in Melbourne Park and will play Elena Rybakina, who defeated women’s world No. 1 Iga Światek on Sunday.
Former French Open champion Rybakina, 23, defeated the 21-year-old 6-4 6-4 on Rod Laver Arena.
Światek was the tournament favorite after reaching the semifinals last year and winning eight titles in 2022, including two grand slams.
“I felt the pressure, and I felt that ‘I don’t want to lose’ instead of ‘I want to win’. So that’s, I think, a base of what I should focus on in (the) next couple of weeks,” Światek told reporters.
Rybakina, who was born in Russia but has represented Kazakhstan since 2018, won her maiden grand slam title at Wimbledon last year and the first for Kazakhstan.
Third seed Pegula is now the highest-ranked player left in the women’s draw after she defeated Czech Barbora Krejcikova 7-5 6-2 in one hour and 41 minutes.
The 2023 Australian Open runs through January 29 in Melbourne.
Say goodbye to the Tiger; it’s time to hop into the Year of the Rabbit.
For many people, Lunar New Year, which falls on January 22 this year, is a time to consult the stars to find out what lies ahead in the coming months.
Most people know the basics: The 12-year Chinese zodiac calendar cycle is represented by 12 different animals – the Chinese zodiac signs. Your zodiac animal is determined by your year of birth.
But that’s only the start. For faithful followers of the system, a year isn’t just categorized by its animal. There’s also a complex sexagenary cycle made up of 10 heavenly stems and 12 earthly branches.
Heavenly stems and earthly branches
Every year, a heavenly stem (one of five elements, which fall into the yin or yang category) is paired with an earthly branch (one of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals).
Gui Mao is the 40th element of the Chinese sexagenary cycle – the Heavenly Stem “Gui” represents water, whereas the earthly branch “Mao” represents Rabbit. That makes 2023 the Year of the Water Rabbit.
“Gui Mao Rabbit Year is quite a special year – when all the elements in a year are yin,” says Thierry Chow, a Hong Kong-based geomancy consultant known for blending traditional Chinese geomancy with modern design elements.
“It’s also uncommon to have the combination of water and rabbit. The rabbit represents wood. Water nurtures wood (according to Chinese geomancy).”
She says industries with wood as their main element – like culture, publishing, agriculture and furniture – would benefit. Fire industries, on the other hand, including digital and technology businesses, may suffer as fire is afraid of Water.
“The Year of Water Rabbit is going to be a gentler year. We’ll have time to take a breather. We’ve been in the tunnel for the last few years, and the light is getting bigger now,” says Chow.
How the ‘Grand Duke of Jupiter’ lords over your luck
Followers believe that for each Chinese zodiac sign, luck will depend largely on the positions of the Tai Sui – the stellar deities thought to rotate parallel to and in the opposite direction of Jupiter.
To calculate how each person will be affected in a particular year, a Chinese geomancy consultant will look at one’s birth chart, which is composed of a wide range of elements – such as the day and time of their birth – to see how they may interact with the year’s elements.

These combinations play an important role for those who follow them, helping them make huge life decisions for the year ahead, such as whether they should get married or start a business.
Different geomancy masters may interpret the data differently. Still, there is a general consensus on what the year means for each zodiac animal based on the positions of the stars, especially Tai Sui.
If your zodiac sign clashes with Tai Sui – aka the Grand Duke of Jupiter – in a particular year, the experts say you might find yourself dealing with disruptions.
For those who may be in conflict with Tai Sui this year, Chow says they should remember the calendar is a rotating cycle.
“It’s like playing musical chairs – whoever sits in the spot gets Tai Sui. You’ll change your position next round,” says Chow, whose zodiac sign will also be in an unfavorable position with Tai Sui this year.
To resolve clashes, one could go to a Chinese temple and make offerings to representations of Tai Sui.
“Even if you don’t believe in it 100%, I feel like it gives you a nice kickstart to the year psychologically,” says Chow. “When things happen along the way, you’ll remember you did that, and it will give you a little cushion.”
Now, it’s time to get specific.
To determine what the Year of the Rabbit could mean for you, find your year of birth and the corresponding animal in the above gallery before reading Chow’s predictions below.
Rabbit
People born in the Year of the Rabbit will be facing their “Ben Ming Nian” – their own zodiac year – in 2023. Followers believe there will be more disruptions and instabilities in the year to come as a result.
“People born in the Rabbit year have to expect big changes health-wise, career-wise and relationship-wise. It could be a bit nerve-wracking, especially for those whose birth charts don’t favor Water,” says Chow.
“But do remember it never is all bad. It may mean an opportunity to grow.”
Rabbits should try to attract positive energy and join happy events when possible.
They should also travel to destinations to their south – doesn’t matter if these southern destinations are within their city or outside their country – says Chow.
Dragon
It’s set to be a pretty good year for Dragons out there. No unlucky stars are affecting their year.
“There are no outstanding concerns, except maybe health for those born in the summer and autumn. They could easily feel stressed,” says Chow.
But the geomancy expert urges Dragons not to make rash decisions at work.
“It doesn’t mean overthinking. Just let things sit longer before you make a decision,” says Chow.
Single Dragons could meet potential romantic partners this year. Their lucky colors are metallic, such as gold or silver.
As for traveling, head west for better fortunes, says Chow.
Snake
People born in Snake years will enjoy good news and abundance as the travel star, Yi Ma Xing, and the fortune star, Cai Xing, will reign over them this year.
“Opportunities, new directions and advancements will come to you at work,” says Chow. “But Snakes need to find balance in life and take a break when needed.”
Romantically, Snakes may find love while out traveling this year. Chow advises them to wear blue or gold and travel to the west or north.
As the climate crisis intensifies, the pressure on the aviation industry to cut emissions increases. And now, the industry has taken a step forward, with a successful test flight of a hydrogen-electric engine, which produces no carbon emissions.
ZeroAvia’s 19-seater Dornier 228 twin-engine aircraft completed a roughly 10-minute test flight on Thursday in the UK. While 19 seats is, of course, tiny compared to regular passenger aircraft, it is the largest aircraft to have made a successful flight powered by hydrogen-electric.
Using liquid hydrogen to feed fuel cells, the technology eliminates carbon emissions during the flight.
This is part of a race to decarbonize the aviation industry, which currently accounts for around 2.5% of global carbon emissions, although its overall contribution to climate is estimated to be higher, due to the other gases, water vapor and contrails it emits.
Hydrogen has been identified as a promising fuel solution for planes because it produces no greenhouse gases when burned. However, unless the hydrogen is produced using renewable energy, the process for creating it relies on fossil fuels.
The Dornier 228 was retrofitted with a full size prototype hydrogen-electric powertrain, containing two fuel cell stacks, on the aircraft’s left wing. Lithium-ion battery packs amped up support during takeoff, while hydrogen tanks and fuel cell power generation systems were placed inside the cabin, with the seats removed.
Half the power came from the fuel cells, and half from the battery packs, a company representative confirmed in a post-flight press conference.
The right wing carried a regular engine, for safety reasons – although it was not used during the flight.
Starting from Cotswold Airport, the airplane completed taxi, takeoff, a full pattern circuit and landing all on the hydrogen-electric engine. It reached a speed of 120 knots, or 139 miles per hour. “All systems performed as expected,” the company said in a press release.
For a commercial flight, of course, the hydrogen tanks and fuel cell power generation systems would be housed on the outside of the aircraft. The company now aims to finalize configuration and submit it for certification by the end of the year.
In a press conference, a company representative said that there were no plans “at the moment” to install the hydrogen-electric powertrains (the mechanism which drives the plane, including fuel tanks and engine) on both wings, but added “Everything is possible, and we are learning.” The company has yet to confirm its launch aircraft.

ZeroAvia’s flight is part of the UK Government-backed HyFlyer II project, which aims to develop a 600kW powertrain to allow zero-emissions flight for 9-19 seater aircraft, and is targeting a 300 nautical mile range. The flight was conducted under a full Part 21 flight permit with the UK Civil Aviation Authority.
The company has come a long way since September 2020, when it completed a hydrogen-electric powered flight of a six-seater Piper Malibu, using a 250kW hydrogen-electric powertrain. It has since completed over 30 flights with the smaller engine.
The company – which already has partnerships with seven aircraft manufacturers – has 1,500 pre-orders for differing engine variants, according to founder and CEO Val Miftakhov at the press conference. Up to 700 of them are for the size of engine that was trialed in the UK on Thursday. “We know the market is there for it, it’s now all about pushing this to the final design,” he added.
The company aims to be serving commercial flights with the technology by 2025. It also aims to scale up the technology to larger 90-seater aircraft, with “further expansion” into narrowbodies in the next decade, they said in a statement. By 2027, they aim to be able to power a 700-mile flight in a 40-80 seater aircraft.
The latter is no simple task.
While hydrogen-powered aircraft have been in development since the mid-20th Century, they have faced significant obstacles, mainly hydrogen’s low energy density by volume compared to kerosene – meaning it would take up about four times the space of jet fuel – and the latter’s availability and historically low price.
The infrastructure required to produce and distribute hydrogen is also an issue. At this year’s Airbus Summit, an industry event hosted by the aircraft manufacturer, Airbus boss Guillaume Faury warned that this was “a big concern” and it could derail the company’s plans to introduce a hydrogen-powered aircraft by 2035.
Airbus announced plans in December to test a hydrogen-powered fuel cell engine on an A380 in 2026.
Days before Airbus’ announcement, Rolls-Royce and budget airline EasyJet said they had successfully converted a regular airplane engine to run on liquid hydrogen fuel – a world first, they claimed.
Meanwhile, other companies are developing technology that aims to deliver electric planes. Miftakhov told CNN in 2020 that compared to even the “wildest predictions for battery technology,” hydrogen has greater potential than all-electric rivals for emissions-free flying.
Meanwhile, ZeroAvia’s Dornier 228 will conduct a series of test flights from Kemble, in the UK’s Lake District, before moving on to demonstration flights from other airports.
Miftakhov said in a statement: “This is a major moment, not just for ZeroAvia, but for the aviation industry as a whole, as it shows that true zero-emission commercial flight is only a few years away.
“The first flight of our 19-seat aircraft shows just how scalable our technology is and highlights the rapid progress of zero-emission propulsion. This is only the beginning – we are building the future of sustainable, zero climate impact aviation.”
In a press conference, calling it “an outstanding day, not just for ZeroAvia or aviation but for the world,” he added: “Aviation’s [contribution] is becoming larger and larger to climate change and we really need solutions.”
The fast-growing industry accounts for 2.1% of manmade carbon emissions worldwide, according to the Air Transport Action Group, and 3.5% of planet-warming emissions in total.
“Today we have witnessed a major step towards achieving that goal [of decarbonization],” he said in the press conference.
“There’s still a way to go but let’s celebrate the achievement.”
In travel news this week, China is on the move as the Lunar New Year rush gets underway, a boy makes the catch of a lifetime, temperatures drop to minus 80 F in the world’s coldest city, plus what it’s like to spend the night in an igloo in the Alps. (Spoiler: It’s absolutely freezing).
Tales from the sea
There has been a recent surge in rescues in the Florida Straits as cruise ships cross paths with Cuban and Haitian migrants attempting to make it to the United States in makeshift boats. Here’s the story of one such rescue, when the huge luxury liner Celebrity Beyond helped 19 people get on board to warmth and safety.
Late last year, a 28-year-old man managed to survive for 20 hours treading water in the Gulf of Mexico after falling off a Carnival cruise ship. Watch him here talk about his confusion and his encounter with an unknown sea creature.
A diver off the coast of Japan captured this extremely rare footage of an 8-foot-long giant squid while a 12-year-old boy hooked a great white shark during a fishing trip with his family near Fort Lauderdale. See the catch here.
Baby, it’s cold outside
Temperatures reached minus 80 F (minus 62.7 C) this week in the world’s coldest city, Yakutsk, in eastern Siberia. That’s the coldest it’s been in more than two decades. With frostbite a constant hazard, “You either adjust and dress accordingly or you suffer,” said one resident.
And what about the people who choose to vacation in these circumstances? Spending the night in an igloo in the Alps sounds pretty neat in theory, but with temperatures several degrees below that found inside a refrigerator, the reality is less than cozy. CNN Travel’s fingers are now thawed out enough to report on our stay.

All that said, you could have a day job where, cold and exhausted, you sit staring at a seal hole in the Arctic ice for 12 hours. But when you capture incredible wildlife photographs like these, the cold-snap snappers say it’s worth it.
Lunar New Year
The Lunar New Year holiday begins on January 22 – that’s almost exactly three years after the first Covid-19 lockdown began in Wuhan. Today, flights from China are back to pre-pandemic levels, and Chinese domestic flights are up 9.5% from January 2019, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium. The newly reopened high-speed rail link between Hong Kong and mainland China has been in huge demand as the Lunar New Year travel rush gets in full swing.
One of the dishes that people will be fortifying themselves with when they reach journey’s end is longevity noodles. According to tradition, the chef shouldn’t cut the noodle strands symbolizing long life, and each strand needs to be eaten whole. Schlurrrrpalicious.
Greener flying
NASA and Boeing are working on a new emission-reducing, single-aisle aircraft design that, if successful, could go into service by the 2030s.
It follows the news last month that Virgin Atlantic this year plans to fly a Boeing 787 from London to New York, powered solely by waste oils and fats, in what it’s billing as the “world’s first” net zero transatlantic flight.
One company is even creating jet fuel from thin air. Watch here to see how they do it.
Scientists are also working on ways to reduce contrails, those wispy ice clouds airplanes leave in their wake. A study has found that they contribute more to global warming than even aviation’s CO2 emissions, but there could be a straightforward solution.
And on a final positive note for the future of flying, for the first time in months, we have no “misbehaving traveler of the week” story to bring you. Well done, everyone.
A dog’s life
Canadian Jess Stone is riding a motorcycle around the world with her German shepherd Moxie as sidekick. The pair are 10 months into a grand tour that will take them around 90 countries throughout North and South America, Africa, Europe and Asia.
Flying with kids
Keeping younger kids engaged, entertained and, most importantly, in their seats is a challenge on airplane trips. Our partners at CNN Underscored, a product reviews and recommendations guide owned by CNN, have put together this roundup of 15 parent-approved activities to help your next flight go more smoothly.
In case you missed it
The ultimate big dog in international tourism has been named.
The most travel-related euros are being thrown into this capital city’s pockets. Here’s why.
A Finnish family moved to Sicily in search of la dolce vita.
Instead they quit after two months, and the reasons why caused public outrage in Italy.
Pizza Hut just made a 14,001-square-foot pepperoni pizza inside the Los Angeles Convention Center.
After the record-breaking feat was documented for Guinness, the 68,000 slices were destined for food banks.
Andy Murray produced yet another Herculean effort at the Australian Open, coming back from two sets and a break down against home favorite Thanasi Kokkinakis in a match that went on past 4 a.m. in Melbourne.
At five hours and 45 minutes, it was the longest match of Murray’s illustrious career, as the 35-year-old – playing with a metal hip following a joint resurfacing operation in 2019 – eventually prevailed 4-6 6-7 7-6 6-3 7-5 to reach the third round.
Kokkinakis will be left to rue what might have been after serving for the match at 5-4 in the third set – “This f*****g sport man,” he tweeted afterward, accompanied by a sad face – but the night will be all about Murray and his remarkable turnaround after four years of mostly pain and heartbreak following that surgery.
After a grueling five-setter against Matteo Berrettini in the opening round, most viewers wondered whether Murray would have anything left in the tank for round two. He did – and then some.
There were times during the match, in particular during that third set, when Murray looked down and out, trudging back to the baseline after every point with an exhausted expression on his face.
Not only did the Scot hang in there, he rolled back the years to produce some stunning tennis in what ended up being the second-longest match in Australian Open history.
One point in particular will certainly live long in the memory. With Kokkinakis two sets up and leading 2-0 in the third set, Murray improbably chased down five successive shots that all should have been winners, before eventually forcing his opponent into a mistake to break serve.
It ended up being perhaps the most crucial point of the match, one that will no doubt go down as an all-time classic in Australia, as Kokkinakis destroyed his racket in frustration following Murray’s defensive heroics.
Murray now holds the record for most comebacks from two sets down of all active players with 11 – and this one might have been his greatest yet. That perhaps sounds strange given it was just the second round of a grand slam against a player ranked 159th in the world, but in the context of what Murray has been through in recent years, few comebacks will have felt sweeter.
When asked in his on-court interview how he had turned the match on its head, Murray was almost at a loss for words.

“I mean, I don’t know … it was unbelievable that I managed to turn that around,” he said with a stutter. “Thanasi was playing … serving unbelievable, hitting his forehand huge and I don’t know how I managed to get through it.
“I did start playing better as the match went on and, yeah, I have a big heart.
“Now, I’m outright the [player with] most matches coming back from two sets to love down, so I’ve done it before,” Murray added.
“I have experience of it and I rely on that experience and that drive and that fight, and my love of the game and competing, and my respect for this event and the competition. That’s why I kept going.”
Murray will now play the No. 24 seed Roberto Bautista Agut, who also came from two sets down earlier on Thursday, for a place in the third round.
It remains to be seen just how much Murray has left to give in Australia, but if this tournament has taught us anything, it is to never write him off.
Paris is a city beloved for fine food, fine art and fine fashion.
But a new index from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) also says that Paris is the world's most powerful city for tourism.
The WTTC, a nonprofit travel industry body based in the UK, analyzed tourism data from the year 2022 to see where travelers were spending the most money.
The overall list of most powerful tourism cities didn't only take museum tickets and hotel rooms into account, though. The other factor was how much local and national governments and businesses are investing in these cities as tourist destinations.
Take list-topper Paris for example: the city is preparing to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. Although fewer than 5% of the facilities will be newly built for the Games, the city is pouring resources into infrastructure, security and other measures that will help them get ready to host the world.
By that accounting, the French capital's overall tourism total came to $35.6 billion.
So, who else made the list?
Two countries each had three cities on the WTTC list. One was the United States, with Orlando, New York City and Las Vegas representing the nation.
While each city makes a significant chunk of cash from tourism, they cater to different kinds of travelers -- Orlando is popular with families visiting the city's theme parks, Las Vegas is an internationally known gambling and nightlife hub and New York attracts foodies and art lovers, among others.
Of this group, Orlando was the highest earner, raking in $31 billion for 2022. That's a whole lot of Mickey Mouse ears.

China on the rise
Three Chinese cities -- Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou -- landed in the top 10 for 2022.
Other Chinese destinations are working their way up the index. In particular, the beach getaway of Sanya -- on sunny Hainan Island in southern China -- and Macao were cited as places to keep an eye on in the future.
China has invested heavily in tourism and is advertising to international travelers now that its border has reopened. Macao is the only city in China with legal gambling, and it's easier for most tourists to go there without a visa -- unlike the mainland.
The WTTC predicts that by 2032 China will dominate its rankings.
"Major cities such as London, Paris and New York will remain global powerhouses but over the next few years, Beijing, Shanghai, and Macao will be moving up the list of top city destinations," Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said in a statement.
Other standouts
Of course, there are more than two countries represented in the WTTC list. Tokyo, Mexico City and London placed in seventh, eighth and ninth respectively to round out the rankings.
In some ways, it was just as interesting to see who didn't make it on the list.
Two surprising omissions were in the Middle East, which has skyrocketed in popularity over the past decade.
Although luxury-packed Dubai and soccer World Cup host Doha topped the list of most amount of tourism revenue, they didn't score as highly in the other categories and wound up outside the top 10.
Amsterdam, Barcelona and Singapore also fell victim to the same phenomenon, scoring highly for amount of money spent by visitors but not landing on the overall "most powerful" list.
The world's most powerful cities for tourism 2022
1. Paris, France
2. Beijing, China
3. Orlando, Florida
4. Shanghai, China
5. Las Vegas, Nevada
6. New York, New York
7. Tokyo, Japan
8. Mexico City, Mexico
9. London, UK
10. Guangzhou, China
Dubai is a huge draw for visitors, attracting almost 13 million international tourists from January to November 2022. They arrive from across the globe to tan on the sandy beaches, shop in the extravagant malls, eat in the world-class restaurants, and even to drink in the city's many bars.
Despite Dubai's popularity as a holiday destination, and reputation as the Gulf's "party capital," restrictions on alcohol have made getting your favorite cocktail in the city an expensive and hard-won indulgence. But on January 1, Dubai announced it would drop its 30% alcohol tax, as well as the fee tourists and expats previously had to pay for a license to buy alcohol from stores to drink in private. The license is still restricted to non-Muslims over the age of 21.
It's a significant change for residents and visitors, although it is still illegal to drink in public places, such as parks, beaches, or malls. And being drunk and disorderly or driving under the influence could result in a fine or a spot in jail.
The move comes as Dubai faces growing competition from its neighbors, particularly Saudi Arabia, which is working hard to boost its own tourism sector. Historically, Dubai has managed to attract more tourists than other Gulf nations, partly thanks to a more liberal approach to regulations imposed on visitors. According to data from the World Travel and Tourism Council, in 2022, international visitors spent over $29 billion in Dubai.
"Dubai became a global tourism magnet while the tax was applied, as it has so much to offer to tourists that the alcohol pricing was never an impediment," explains Magdalena Karolak, associate professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at a university in the United Arab Emirates.

According to Karolak, the new rules are in line with other social changes implemented in recent years. These include the shift to a Saturday-Sunday weekend, which was previously on Friday and Saturday, food outlets being permitted to continue service during the daytime throughout the holy month of Ramadan, with significantly reduced restrictions, and the creation of a new family law for non-Muslim expat residents. The family law comes into effect in February and allows expats to deal with personal status issues (such as divorce, inheritance, and custody disputes) without having to return to their country of origin.
"Altogether, these social changes make Dubai an attractive city for a long-term presence and not just a short-term holiday hotspot," says Karolak. "The new ruling also removed the paperwork and fees required for residents to apply for a liquor license, which is noteworthy."
Local impact
But there could be a downside to the changes. Karolak points out that the restrictions on alcohol have meant that Dubai suffers little alcohol-related crime, such as driving under the influence and disorderly behavior.
It is unclear whether the new rules will be permanent. Karolak says the changes will be in place on a trial basis until the end of 2023, "And, no doubt, its extension or not will rely upon the impacts felt in the emirate."
Samantha Wood, founder of Dubai-based restaurant review website FooDiva.net, believes that the new initiative will be a "fantastic boost" for Dubai's tourism sector.
"We've already seen alcohol distributors drop their prices by 30% for both trade and retail," Wood tells CNN. "The consumer is, naturally, expecting restaurants to follow and reduce prices on their alcoholic beverage lists by the same amount once orders for new stock kick in."
But she suspects that not all restaurants will reflect the full tax cut in their prices. "I fear many restaurants will use this opportunity to minimize the impact of other rising costs and inflation, including the pending arrival of corporate tax," she explains.
According to Wood, the move should also entice wider interest in Dubai from international wine and spirits brands which in the past regarded the emirate as cost prohibitive.
"It's important to note that this new initiative is currently only for one year, a clever move to allow the authorities to monitor the situation and see if restaurants play ball by dropping prices," she says. "I hope restaurateurs will see the big picture and drop prices sufficiently and promptly."
Its mountains, canyons, beaches and lagoons make it one of Italy's most beautiful and varied landscapes, but few people -- and that includes Italians -- know anything about it.
Perhaps because it's tucked away on the country's northeastern border with Slovenia and Austria, perhaps because of a history of invasions, including the Austro-Hungarian empire, or perhaps because of the many languages spoken by locals, it barely seems like part of Italy.
But although Friuli Venezia Giulia stretches from the snow-capped Alpine reaches of the Dolomites to the sun-kissed waters of the northern Adriatic sea, it never experiences the crowds that leave some parts of Italy straining in the summer.
And yet, say locals, it's every bit as worth visiting as the rest of Italy.
"Unlike other Italian regions, we're not advertised and are far from mass tourism," says local tour guide Roberta Bressan. "Ours is a small-scale, niche reality travelers should discover bit by bit, made of a constellation of beautiful tiny towns and different traditions."
One of the region's biggest selling points is its scenery. With 13 natural reserves and the pristine park of the Friuli Dolomite Mountains, the region lures tourists seeking to connect with nature or explore the outdoors.
"It's a green, heavenly patch. You can go biking and trekking in the Dolomites' park and kayaking along mountain springs and rock tunnels with fluorescent blue waters," says local travel blogger Luca Vivan.
Friuli's verdant valleys are surrounded by Alpine peaks which, on clear days, offer views all the way down to the coast. Labyrinths of caves, ravines and canyons with waterfalls and fast-flowing rivers dot the vast karst limestone plateau at the feet of the hills.
Outdoor activities happen all year round. Warmer weather brings hang gliding flights, kayaking in turquoise clear rivers, sailing, windsurfing and rock climbing. In winter, there's skiing and sledding in cozy resorts like Tarvisio, Tolmezzo and Piancavallo.
Geological wonders include the underwater cave of Gorgazzo lake, with its incredible tropical blue-green colors. There's also the spellbinding Grotta Gigante, or Giant Cave, one of the world's largest tourist caverns.

There are trekking trails that follow the rock-embedded footprints and skeletons of dinosaurs and old shepherd routes that connect sleepy hamlets.
Friuli is also a sunbathers' hotspot.
The lagoon island-town of Grado, which resembles a miniature Venice, is as close as Friuli gets to a popular vacation resort while Lignano Sabbiadoro is one long peninsula of golden beaches.
Trieste boasts an unusual segregated beach, with origins dating back several centuries. Visitors to Bagno all Lanterna are divided into men and women, and kept apart by a white wall running up the middle of the beach.
"Residents are very fond and proud of this place," says Trieste local Maria Bonacci. "They see it as embodying avant-garde same-sex freedom, and the beach's popularity keeps growing even among youth."
Trieste is a destination in its own right. Friuli's capital is sometimes known as Italy's Little Vienna because its Austro-Hungarian heritage is reflected in the majestic Mitteleuropean architecture and decadent fin de siècle vibe.
The city also boasts one of Europe's largest squares, Piazza Unità D'Italia, overlooking the sea and surrounded by elegant palazzos showing off the sumptuous imperial grandeur of the past -- a fading decadence, complete with historical cafes, that has long attracted artists and writers, such as Ireland's James Joyce.
Bonacci believes what makes Friuli Venezia Giulia unique is its "dual soul."
She says the juxtaposition of the imperial grandeur is reflected in cities such as Trieste and the rural, interior mountainous areas made of "silent secret villages where ancient traditions survive."
Strong bora winds that sometimes buffet Trieste with gusts of up to 160 kilometers per hour also help power the Barcolana, one of the world's largest sailing regattas, which attracts more than 2,000 boats of all sizes every October.
Aristocratic glamor
Friuli's smaller towns are also worth exploring. Udine is a small-scale Venice with luxuriant gardens. Gorizia, on the border with Slovenia, is known as Italy's Salzburg. The UNESCO-listed Cividale del Friuli has a picturesque medieval center overlooking the aquamarine Natisone River.
For fans of archeology, there's the city of Aquileia, the ancient Roman capital of Friuli, which has an impressive basilica featuring a huge paleo-Christian floor mosaic that depicts symbolic animals and the tree of life.
Aristocratic glamor is everywhere. The region boasts an incredible array of fascinating castles and fortresses which hark to its wealthy and powerful past.
The Miramare Castle is Trieste's jewel, built by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg as a luxurious retreat in the 19th century. Perched on a promontory and surrounded by a luxuriant park it boasts a spectacular view of the Gulf of Trieste.
One stunning castle, which is also a luxury resort, is Castello di Spessa where it's said the infamous Venetian lover Giacomo Casanova sojourned during one of his journeys and, predictably, had an affair with a maid. Today, guests can sleep in his extravagant suite.
But Friuli also has a "primeval" bucolic soul. It is dotted with tiny old hamlets where farming traditions and folklore live on.
The hamlet of Sappada is a remote German-speaking enclave and skiing resort with traditional, unusual slant-roofed wooden dwellings known as blockbau. Winters offer silent landscapes of snowy blankets.
Pesariis is an Alpine village famous for huge artisan clocks that decorate its alleys while nearby Sauris is known for its traditional beers and speck -- a cured and smoked ham.
Cordovado, Toppo and Fagagna, villages with intact medieval districts and a sleepy ambiance, seem frozen in time and are part of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages club.
The citadel-fortress of Palmanova is a Renaissance jewel of Venetian origins shaped like a nine-pointed star. Legend has it that Leonardo Da Vinci designed it as an "ideal city."
Local guide Bressan, who offers tailored tours of the region, recommends navigating along Grado's lagoon while lunching on regional seafood dishes, seeing Friuli's medieval isolated rural chapels, exploring the Karst Plateau in fall "when colors are like an artist's palette," and visiting former mining centers, such as Cludinico, which are now open-air museums.
Friuli's "war tours" are also quite popular, says Bressan. "I often organize day trips for passengers arriving on cruise ships in Trieste. American families long to see the places where their fathers or grandparents served during World War II, and they already know where to go and what to see."
The Airbus A380 entered service nearly two decades ago, but although passengers loved it, it was doomed from the start. Too big and too expensive for airlines to run due to its four engines, it quickly fell out of favor, surpassed by more fuel-efficient twin-engine jets.
After its debut in 2005, Airbus ended up building only 251 A380s -- far fewer than it originally intended -- and production ended in late 2021. Although most of them are still flying, amid a post-Covid resurgence of the aircraft, several have already been scrapped or recycled -- way ahead of the usual schedule for a passenger aircraft.
"The A380 is certainly one of the youngest aircraft getting recycled," says Geoff Van Klaveren, an aviation analyst at advisory firm IBA. "Normally a commercial aircraft can be expected to be in operation for 25 years before being scrapped."
Only a handful of companies are capable of recycling the world's biggest passenger plane, and the most experienced is Tarmac Aerosave, which has recycled over 300 aircraft since it was founded in 2007, across three sites in France and Spain. The company, which is partly owned by Airbus itself, has already recycled six A380s. It is currently working on a seventh, which will be completed in March.
Tarmac won't say exactly which airlines these A380 used to fly with, but Van Klaveren reckons they likely came from Air France, Singapore Airlines and Emirates. It's not an easy job. "It's harder to scrap an A380 in the sense that there is a limited market for the parts," he says.
"That said, being an aluminum frame, it's easier than a composite aircraft such as the A350 or the Boeing 787, where currently there is no way to recycle the airframe and it is simply cut into pieces and either buried or stored."
How do you recycle such a huge airplane, and what happens to the resulting parts and materials? "Recycling starts by reusing and extending the life of the different components of the aircraft, as you do at your home," says Lionel Roques, sales director at Tarmac Aerosave. "So the first step is to take out some pieces that will continue flying on another aircraft."
These include the engines, the landing gear and some of the avionics -- the electronic components of the aircraft that handle tasks like communications or navigation. These parts are checked and resold with complete traceability, guaranteeing their airworthiness. In the case of A380 parts, they become spare components for the existing fleet of A380s. They can also be used for training purposes. "Sometimes we can give them to schools or training facilities so that new mechanics or students coming into the industry can train on real parts," says Roques.
This part of the process generally lasts a few weeks. Once it's completed, they move on to the next stage: waste management. "This is where we separate all the different materials, whether it's aluminum, titanium or copper, and make sure that we give them to the proper recovery channels that will reuse them in something new tomorrow," says Roques.
Due to the massive size of the A380, which has 120 tons of aluminum alone, this phase lasts months, and is particularly challenging. Roques explains: "Because it's such a large aircraft, you need a large facility, and you need to adapt your tooling and your methods to something that's very big. You also have to be careful in terms of safety and work environment, because when you've got a mechanic working on the second deck of the aircraft, that's really high."

Tarmac says that it commits to recycling "up to the last screw," and although no specific regulations exist in the field, it aims to recover over 90% of the aircraft by weight. "The remaining waste is as minimal as possible. Of course, some composite material or some dangerous goods that cannot be recycled will remain, but we're talking about a small percentage, like 1% to 3%, that will be residual waste or go to landfill," adds Roques.
The cost of the operation is in the "six figure" region, he says. It's heavily dependent on the number of parts that need to be removed from the aircraft -- and that can vary based on the requirements of the client.
But there's also a different way of doing things: upcycling. Or as Roques puts it: "Taking out parts that are iconic or interesting to use as decorative elements." Late last year, Airbus did just that in a bid to raise money for charity, and auctioned off hundreds of parts from a former Emirates A380.
This gave aviation enthusiasts a chance to buy almost every piece of the plane, from smaller items like doorstops, seatbelts, handrails, exit signs, latches, lamps, curtains and kettles to bulky ones including entire seat rows, staircases, drinks carts and engine parts, some of which came in special editions painted by a range of artists.
The most desirable item, however, was a full business cabin bar, measuring over seven feet high, which has become one of the symbols of the airplane in its lavish Emirates configuration. It sold for about $50,000.
An irreplaceable aircraft
A380 parts derived from recycling will long be needed to support the existing fleet of the aircraft, especially as more and more airlines bring their superjumbos back into service. The latest to do so was Qantas, which revived one of its own after two years of storage. Meanwhile both Etihad and Lufthansa are expected to bring part of their dormant A380 fleets back into service in early 2023.
"The life of the A380 is not written yet, and to support the operation you need spare parts. The fact that we are now dismantling aircraft and putting spare parts into the market will support an extended operation of the plane," says Roques.
He believes that in the future, A380 operators will consolidate, leaving just one for each major region: British Airways for transatlantic, Emirates in the Middle East, Qantas in Oceania and Singapore in Asia.
He also thinks that we'll never see the aircraft's like again. "It's an unmatched and unique aircraft, and its life will be extended as much as possible -- but I don't see something ever replacing it."
Novak Djokovic dispelled any concerns that the lingering hamstring injury which has hampered him since last week would affect his performances at the Australian Open, as the world No. 5 battled past Spain’s Roberto Carballés Baena 6-3 6-4 6-0 in the opening round in Melbourne.
It was certainly a stern opening test for Djokovic, as world No. 75 Carballés Baena proved a gritty and determined opponent for the opening two sets.
However, Djokovic eventually broke Carballés Baena’s resistance with a truly stunning third set of tennis to get his quest for a record-extending 10th Australian Open title off to the best possible start.
Djokovic received a warm welcome from the crowd in Melbourne, as he had done last week during his victorious run at the Adelaide warmup event, in what was his first Australian Open appearance since the deportation debacle one year ago.
“Unbelievable atmosphere, thanks for staying this late everybody,” Djokovic said to huge applause and cheers in his post-match interview. “Also thank you for giving such a welcome and reception I could only dream of.
“I’m very happy I’m back in Australia and back here on the court where I’ve had the biggest success of my career. This court is the most special in my life.
“The more you win on a certain court, the more comfortable and confident you feel. That’s probably one of the reasons I’ve been fortunate enough to win a lot of matches on this court in the night session.
“If I have to choose one court and one condition, it would be night sessions on the Rod Laver Arena all day long.”
Novak is back
The win was Djokovic’s 35th straight victory in Australia and the signs were ominous for Carballés Baena in the opening exchanges.
With the scores tied at 2-2 and the match just 19 minutes old, the difference in exertion between the two players was already apparent.
At one end, Carballés Baena was breathing heavily, his soaked shirt already sticking to him. At the other, it looked as though Djokovic had barely broken a sweat.
The Serb was soon made to work hard, however, as Carballés Baena manufactured a 0-40 lead in the fifth game to earn himself three break points.

Djokovic’s left thigh was heavily strapped as he continues to manage the hamstring injury that forced him to pull out of a practice match last week and fans perhaps would have briefly started to wonder if it was hindering him.
But the 21-time grand slam champion swiftly allayed those fears and ripped off five straight points to hold serve and then promptly proceeded to break Carballés Baena to love.
It wasn’t just the Spaniard’s serve that Djokovic had broken but his spirit, too, as the world No. 5 won 13 of the next 15 points to take a commanding 5-2 lead.
Keeping up that early level of intensity just to keep pace with Djokovic was always going to be difficult for Carballés Baena and the nine-time Australian Open champion soon closed out the first set 6-3.
However, huge credit must go to Carballés Baena for not letting the disappointment of the first set affect his morale, as the 29-year-old continued to play aggressive tennis and some stunning defense to really make Djokovic earn his first service game of the second set.
With the scores tied at 3-3, an epic 28-shot rally – which Djokovic won after chasing down a Carballés Baena drop shot – set the tone for what would be the deciding game of the second set.
It was a grueling five-minute long slog with Djokovic eventually coming out on top to break serve for the first time in the set, before going on to hold to love in the very next game.
Another hold of serve from Carballés Baena ensured Djokovic would have to serve for the second set, but he once again held to love to take a commanding two-set lead.
The match was now seemingly over as a contest as Djokovic won the opening two games of the third set to love and then broke Carballés Baena to take a 3-0 lead.
It was a truly absurd spell of tennis, during which Djokovic won 16 of 17 points as the Serb turned up the heat and entered the zone that has made him completely unplayable at moments during his career.
For any of Djokovic’s prospective Australian Open opponents that were watching, perhaps the most frightening part of this final set was that the 35-year-old was seemingly still playing well within his limits.
Djokovic closed out the final set without dropping a game to send a real statement of intent to the rest of the draw.
It was a harsh end to the match for Carballés Baena, who had performed admirably in the opening two sets to make this opener a real contest.
If there was anyone doubting Djokovic’s status as the favorite for the Australian Open prior to this match, there won’t be now.
When a huge plumbing disaster strikes, most Airbnb guests would pack their bags and demand their money back, while their hosts would glumly write off their profits and try to forget about it.
But for German travelers Elke Thau-Montgomery and Rudi Thau, and their American hosts Beth Ann Moon and Jennifer Steinberg, a calamitous Airbnb situation turned into a continent-spanning, five-years-and-counting friendship.
Florida-based couple Beth and Jennifer listed the apartment connected to their home on Airbnb for the first time in 2017. Beth and Jennifer are gay, and were wary about homophobia from their guests (Beth jokes that she hid from the first few bookers.)
But guests from the US and beyond came and went, and largely kept to themselves.
Elke and Rudi stood out from the beginning. They were friendly and relaxed, and arrived bearing a bottle of gin as a gift.
Elke and Rudi were attracted to Beth and Jennifer's Airbnb because of its location -- near the Everglades in the southern tip of Florida -- and Beth and Jennifer's inviting backyard pool.
But what sealed the deal was the Volkswagen Beetle parked outside. The German couple figured anyone with a VW Beetle was likely to be on their wavelength.
"Let's go there, they must be nice people," Elke recalls thinking.
When Elke and Rudi presented their hosts with the gin, Beth went into the house and brought out another bottle from the same distillery, about double the size.
"We were laughing at each other," says Elke.
"We hit it off as soon as they arrived," says Beth.
The two couples ended up sitting outside all night, drinking and chatting.
"It was really the first time that we had ever connected with people that were here," says Jennifer. "They were just like us, we had so many things in common."
But then a couple of days later, disaster hit. The plumbing in the Airbnb stopped working. To fix the issue, Jennifer and Beth had to employ emergency contractors who promptly switched off the water supply, and dug a giant hole in the backyard.
"They jack hammered the outside, because the ground is made of coral rock," explains Jennifer. "It was quite an interruption. Elke and Rudi couldn't use the bathroom. It was a bad situation."
Jennifer and Beth were apologetic. They expected their German visitors would be gone by the next morning.
"Most people, I think, that were at an Airbnb would demand their money back and demand that we get a hotel for them," says Jennifer. "I didn't know what to expect. And the next thing I knew, they were in our backyard building us a fire pit."
Rudi and Elke made it clear they weren't going anywhere unless Jennifer and Beth wanted them to. The Germans weren't rattled by the mishap, finding it entertaining more than anything else.
Elke says they just felt bad for their hosts and their plumbing problems. The fire pit was the first in a series of kind gestures that Elke and Rudi hoped would cheer up a panicked Beth and Jennifer.
And rather than driving their guests out the door, the crisis only brought the two couples closer.

"They just became our such close friends," says Jennifer."They knew we were upset. And they tried to do things around our house to make us feel happy. And they didn't go anywhere. They stuck with us."
An arrangement was soon worked out whereby Rudi and Elke could make use of bathrooms in the main house. Evenings were spent sitting around the new fire pit. The two bottles of gin were emptied, as the two couples whiled away hours discussing cooking, family, travels, their respective countries and cultures and their thoughts on life, politics and friendship.
"We all kind of think the same about things -- politics, cultural things and stuff," says Elke. "We connected and that was cool."
Elke and Rudi were avid travelers who always greeted Airbnb hosts with warmth and friendliness. But they'd never bonded with anyone in the way they bonded with Jennifer and Beth.
"We didn't have an experience like this before and we're very grateful for it, to get some wonderful friends out of that," says Elke.
"I'll tell you that I never had that experience with anybody," agrees Jennifer. "Due to our ages, we never really expected to make such close friends so late in life."
As Elke and Rudi's trip wound to a close, plans started brewing for Beth and Jennifer to visit Rudi and Elke in Bavaria. Before the German travelers left, the Americans booked flights for later that year.
The foursome parted as close friends. And once Rudi and Elke were back home in Germany, Beth and Jennifer refunded their stay.
"We knew they wouldn't accept it if we did it while they were here," says Jennifer.
Several months later, the two couples reunited in Germany like no time had passed. Jennifer and Beth loved seeing the country through the eyes of people who live there. They also popped over to Austria and the Czech Republic.
"Neither one of us had ever been to Europe," says Jennifer. "We've just been seeing the world and it's because of Rudi and Elke. There isn't any way that we could have ever done, what we've done and what we've seen in Europe on our own."
From there, a tradition was established. Every winter, Elke and Rudi spend an extended vacation with Beth and Jennifer. And in the fall, the Americans return the visit.
Beth and Jennifer no longer rent their space out on Airbnb -- it's reserved for Elke and Rudi, plus they've since adopted dogs.
Five years on from their first meeting, the couples' loved ones have also met and bonded. Today, Rudi, Elke, Jennifer and Beth see themselves as one extended, cross-continental family.
"Even when we go to Germany, their family is our family," says Beth.
Rudi and Elke erected a homemade maypole (a tall wooden pole traditionally used in European folk festivals) in their yard in Bavaria, topped with a picture of their family. Naturally, Jennifer and Beth are included in the illustration.
"It's just such a kind representation or symbol of our combined cultures and how we feel about each other like family," says Jennifer.
While the two couples bonded from day one, they credit the plumbing mishap for cementing their friendship, at least in part.
"I don't know if I can say any one thing was the alchemy that clicked, because it just happened. But I think it was the plumbing," says Jennifer. "Maybe we'd be friends anyway. But if we hadn't had a crisis to get through together, it wouldn't have been the same."
"Besides that chemistry between people, I do believe it's a little bit the way also we reacted to this little mishap with the plumbers," says Elke. "Rudi and I tried to take it with a lot of humor, because things happen, it's just the way of life."
Right now, Rudi and Elke are visiting Beth and Jennifer in the US, and the group are busy planning a summer 2023 Croatia vacation. When the friends aren't physically together, they catch up via regular video calls. They see themselves as not just best friends, but surrogate family.
And they're delighted that travel -- and more specifically, a travel mishap -- brought them together.
"Travel, and you learn," is how Rudi sums it up.
"You never know who you're going to meet," says Jennifer "Just be open-minded, and let people into your heart. These chance encounters can change somebody's life, and Rudi and Elke have certainly changed my life. It's not always about romance. It's about people and the energy they have and how you just never know."
It isn't every day that you spot a motorcyclist riding along the road with a German shepherd dog on the back of their bike.
So it's not surprising that the sight of content creator Jess Stone and her beloved dog Moxie cruising along together usually has onlookers doing double takes.
"Every car that rides up beside us, they [the people inside] take out their phones, almost causing accidents because they're trying to get the shot," she tells CNN Travel. "It's hilarious."
Stone and Moxie, who weighs around 34 kilograms, are currently 10 months into an epic bike trip that will see them travel across around 90 countries throughout Central America, North and South America, Africa, Europe and Asia.
The pair have been on the road since last March, when they set off, along with Stone's husband Greg, who rides behind them.
"I am always in the front," explains Stone. "I want to go through the obstacles first."
Originally from Canada, Stone first learned to ride a motorbike on the side streets of Liberia, where she and Greg were living at the time, over a decade ago and admits that it was far from an easy process.
"Having your partner teach you how to ride is not the best thing," she adds. "He wasn't very patient with me."
Once she finally felt at ease on a motorbike, the couple, who have been married for eight years, went on an eight-month long motorcycle trip together from North to South America. A few years after they returned, they moved to Guatemala, and Moxie came into their lives.
"She picked me 100%," Stone says, recounting the moment she first laid eyes on the canine while viewing a litter of German shepherd puppies in one of the neighboring towns.
"She was there at my heels just waiting for me to love her."
While both Stone and her husband were determined to include Moxie in their travels, she explains that she "didn't want to have a sidecar or a trailer or something that was going to really change the dynamic of riding," now that she was finally comfortable on a motorcycle.
They quickly began designing what would later become the K9 Moto Cockpit, a motorcycle dog carrier they manufacture in Guatemala, along with a range of outdoor dog gear, through their company Ruffly.
"Everybody always asks how long it takes to teach your dog how to ride," says Stone. "Honestly, it took Moxie the weekend.
"It took me a lot longer to feel comfortable having that much weight on the back, because I'd never rode with a passenger."
After deciding that she was ready for another big adventure, this time with Moxie along for the ride, Stone reached out to global nonprofit Girl Up -- a girl-centered leadership development initiative -- and the GoRUFFLY Around the World adventure was born.
"Obviously I wanted to travel the world," says Stone, who aims to raise $100,000 for Girl Up's global empowerment projects. "But I also wanted to show people that you can do it with a big dog."
Being able to take Moxie on this particular trip has made it that much more special for Stone.
"It's like you get to experience the adventure twice," she explains. "You experience it for yourself. And then you experience it from her perspective, because she's right behind me.
"I see her [Moxie] in my mirror all the time. Her head is right up against my side. Sometimes she even rests her big snout on my shoulder with her chin up there.

"It makes me feel so happy that she's really experiencing everything. It's always new sights, sounds and smells that she's looking at and experiencing."
Of course, traveling with a dog has its disadvantages. They are largely limited to dog friendly places and rely on wild camping, and occasional Airbnbs, while on the road so that Moxie can roam free.
"You have to be the type of person who enjoys natural places and outdoors," adds Stone.
"Because they are the places where we can bring her. If you're looking to be in the city and go to all these fancy restaurants, traveling with a dog does make it a bit more challenging."
While they'd originally planned to ride from Guatemala up to the Arctic Ocean, and across to Canada, before flying to Spain and heading to Africa, the significant cost increase due to a number of issues, including rising oil prices and supply shortages, forced them to change their route.
Stone points out that Moxie needs to be shipped in a giant sized crate as unaccompanied cargo due to her size.
This meant that the total cost for her alone would have been around $6,500, including vet fees, cargo shipment and international pet exporter fees from Toronto to Spain, if they'd stuck to their original plan.
The price of shipping their motorcycles had also risen significantly by the time they began the trip.
"It's just got really expensive," says Stone, who is documenting the journey via Instagram, as well as a weekly YouTube series.
They ultimately chose to travel "tip to tip and top to bottom," making their way from Guatemala to Mexico, the US, Canada and on to the Arctic Ocean.
From here, they began riding to the top of North America, before turning around and heading back towards South America.
Before setting off, Stone booked in some private off-road training lessons to ensure that she had the skills required to navigate some of the trickier sections of the route.
"Obviously, I've ridden off road many times, but I never really felt comfortable," she says. "And I wanted to feel really good about it because I have my Moxie on the back."
She admits to being particularly anxious about riding along the remote Dempster Highway, a long gravel road in Canada that leads up to the Arctic Ocean.
"I was concerned that I was going to crash and hurt my bike," she says. "It's funny, I never really think about hurting myself. My bike is what I'm most concerned with."
Thankfully they were able to pass through without incident, but Stone says she's often plagued by thoughts of something going wrong during the journey.
"My biggest fear is not being able to continue the trip and having something happen with the bike on the off road stretches," she says. "Luckily, nothing like that happened."
While Stone stresses that her riding skills are developing all the time, that hasn't stopped her from doubting herself regularly.
"Do I still worry about the dirt roads that come up? Yes. Do I worry that we're going to go down and I'm going to break my bike? Yes.
"But I can't stress enough how important it is to practice those skills. It really makes a difference. It makes the experience that much more positive."
Although things have gone relatively smoothly so far, Stone has occasionally lost her balance while riding, causing her and Moxie to "plop over."
Having her husband, who she describes as the "gear mule," behind her has no doubt been a great source of comfort.
"I carry the shepherd, he carries the camping equipment," she adds, before explaining that they don't necessarily ride together continuously and sometimes take different routes.
"Sometimes he wants to try a different road or I want to go a different way and then we meet up with each other after that. But I'm self-sufficient the way I am."
So far, their biggest hurdle has been having to replace her bike in May. After experiencing various "oil leak issues," Stone learned that her 2013 BMW G650GS would require a hugely expensive engine rebuild.
She ended up buying a newer second hand model of the bike for roughly the same price as the rebuild.
"That was an unexpected expense," she says. "But that [new] bike is going to take me the rest of the way."

The NFL Playoffs have finally arrived. The highly-anticipated Wild Card Weekend kicks off with two games on Saturday.
By the end of the weekend, three teams will be eliminated and three teams will be one step closer to the NFL’s biggest stage.
Here’s what to expect on Saturday:
Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers, 4:30 p.m. ET
The weekend begins in Santa Clara, California with the NFC West rivals Seahawks and 49ers. It will be the third meeting between the two teams this season, though just the second time they have ever met in the postseason.
Most interestingly, the matchup features two improbable quarterbacks that 18 weeks ago no one could have predicted would be in this position.
As the successor to Russell Wilson, Seahawks’ quarterback Geno Smith stepped into the role with low expectations. He not only met those expectations, but surpassed them by posting career numbers in nearly every category.
At 32 years old, he earned his first Pro Bowl bid and his first trip to the postseason in his 10-year career. He powered the Seahawks to a winning season and secured the seventh and final NFC playoff spot.
Regardless of the outcome on Saturday, Smith is poised as a frontrunner for comeback player of the year.
On the opposing side is 2022’s “Mr. Irrelevant,” who contrary to the nickname, will not be soon forgotten.
Brock Purdy reluctantly earned the title as the last pick in last year’s draft. What 49ers executives didn’t know at the time was that the pick would eventually save their season.
The team started the year with three quarterbacks. After Trey Lance and Jimmy Garropolo suffered unlikely season-ending injuries, the keys were handed to the rookie Purdy. The 23-year-old took the opportunity in his stride, leading the 49ers to a perfect six wins in six games to wrap up the season.
If he’s able to continue past the first round, the rise of Mr. Irrelevant will no doubt be one of the most extraordinary stories of the entire season.
All circumstances considered, the stage is set for a 49ers victory.

Kyle Shanahan’s squad is healthy despite a season full of injuries, has one of the best defensive units in the league, and is riding a 10-game winning streak. They have the experience, the talent, and the momentum needed to make a deep playoff run.
While it’s quite remarkable that the underdog Seahawks have made it this far, it’s likely that their season ends here.
Los Angeles Chargers at Jacksonville Jaguars, 8:15 p.m. ET
Both teams have a lot to prove when the Jaguars host the Chargers on Saturday night.
Neither team was expected to make the playoffs this season. Neither team has seen the playoffs in the past five years. Neither franchise has ever won a Super Bowl.
If the Jags make it out of the first round, they would become the first team in NFL history to win a postseason just a season after finishing with the league’s worst or tied-for-the-worst record.
This game is arguably the most evenly matched of the entire weekend.
Both teams hit their stride at the end of the regular season, with the Jaguars ending on a five-game win streak and the Chargers winning four of their final five. Both teams possess some of the league’s most promising young quarterbacks making their postseason debut, Trevor Lawrence, 23, and Justin Herbert, 24, respectively.
Herbert finished the regular season ranked second in completions and pass yards, and with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Lawrence, despite an up-and-down season, set career highs in pass yards and touchdown passes. He finished with 25 touchdowns and over the last 10 weeks of the season, led the AFC with a 104.6 passer rating.
Ultimately, this game will likely be a high-scoring, back-and-forth affair. The Jaguars have the better ground game, but the Chargers have the better passing game.
Neither defense is equipped to stop their opponents’ biggest strengths. The outcome of this game will likely be decided by a single score or late-game mistake.

From legendary nightlife hotspots to volcanic outposts far off the continent's mainland, Europe has islands in spades. But for every Mykonos, Ibiza or Santorini, there's someplace lesser known and equally lovely to escape to where you can ditch the crowds and get closer to nature.
Here are some of the best islands in Europe for getting away from almost everyone:
Schiermonnikoog, the Netherlands
The Netherlands is better known for canals, dikes and tropical Dutch Caribbean Islands like Bonaire and Curaçao than the sandspun isles along the country's North Sea coast. But one of Europe's most peaceful island escapes awaits on Schiermonnikoog in the West Frisian Islands, located off the Netherlands' northern coast across a shallow inlet of the North Sea called the Wadden Sea.
Home to just 950 people and a lone town, Schier, as locals call their island, is primarily national parkland, covered in dunes and forests and with some of Europe's most pristine beaches.
"Besides the beautiful nature and the vastness of it, there is not much to do on the island. And that is precisely the charm," says Annemarieke Romeijn, who has a holiday home on Schiermonnikoog and has been visiting all her life.
Only residents are allowed to drive cars on the island, which you can get to from the mainland Dutch village of Lauwersoog by hopping a 45-minute ferry. Once there, visitors can spend their time hunting for pieces of amber washed ashore on the island's wide white sand beaches, take kitesurfing lessons along natural sandbanks and cycle and hike the island's miles of lonely trails.
Heimaey, Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland
Home to more puffins than people, the island of Heimaey in the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands) off Iceland's south coast looks straight from a story book, with emerald green cliffs dotted with sheep, a sweeping black sand beach and sea caves yawning from its rugged coastline.
"The view alone coming into Heimaey takes your breath away," says Eyrún Aníta Gylfadóttir of Hotel Ranga, a hotel on mainland Iceland that regularly sends guests on day trips by ferry to the Westman Islands, a 40-minute crossing. "The harbor is surrounded by high cliffs and home to seabirds of many kinds such as puffins, northern gannet, northern fulmar and Manx shearwater," she says.
A cataclysmic volcanic eruption on Heimaey in 1973 covered the area in 200 millions tons of ash and lava but miraculously just one death was reported. Today, utter peace reigns, with lonely hiking trails to explore and vast ocean views.
Only about 4,500 people share Vestmannaeyjar with nearly a million puffin pairs that make up the largest Atlantic puffin colony on the planet. The breeding season, between April and late summer, sees birds careening from the cliffs and carrying fish to their young in cliffside burrows.

One of the most remote islands in an already remote archipelago, Flores Island in the westernmost stretches of the Azores is a nature lover's dream.
Deep blue crater lakes, vivid green slopes, plunging valleys, waterfalls and boiling hot springs are among the otherworldly sights on the 55-square-mile volcanic island home to roughly 3,400 people, where you can arrive via flights from other Azorean islands
"On this island you have the sensation that you are in another world. No pollution, no stress, no noise." says Gabriela Silva, 69, who was born on Flores and still lives on the island near an Airbnb she rents to guests. "The sea all around is very clean, deep blue and you can dive in and feel the sensation of being in the house of gods."
One of the most magical sites on Flores is Rocha dos Bordões, a geological formation of basalt columns draped in vegetation that looks like the backdrop of a dinosaur film.
With just 26 rooms, Hotel das Flores is Flores' largest hotel, located in the island's main harbor town, Santa Cruz das Flores. Vacation rentals are scattered throughout the island.
Naustholmen, Norway
Visitors must fly into Bodø in Northern Norway then continue north by boat to reach this private island owned by Norwegian adventurer Randi Skaug, the first Norwegian woman to scale Mount Everest.
Naustholmen guests stay in rooms spread across three houses on the island and spend their days kayaking to white sandy beaches lapped by deep blue waters or hiking nearby peaks for views of the Lofoten Islands to the north. They can also simply swing in a hammock (or even sleep overnight outside in one) and do nothing at all, surrounded by the silence and beauty of this remote place.
"Have lunch over the fire on a beach, go hiking across the spectacular Nordskot Traverse or hear a mini concert in a local cave," says Torunn Tronsvang, CEO of travel company Up Norway. "This is a place which will give energy and inspiration."
The French government is planning to raise the official retirement age by two years as part of a long-delayed reform to the country’s pension system that prompted labor unions to call for nationwide strikes next week.
New legislation will require French citizens to work until 64, from 62 currently, to qualify for a full pension. From September this year, the regular retirement age will increase by three months a year until 2030.
The higher retirement age should tackle a pension funding deficit, Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne told reporters on Tuesday as she laid out the reforms.
“I am well aware that changing our pension system raises questions and fears among the French people,” she said, but added that allowing the deficit to grow would be “inexcusable.”
The proposed reforms will bring in about €17.7 billion ($19 billion) annually by 2030, Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said at the press conference.
Other changes announced by Borne include increasing the minimum monthly pension allowance and counting maternity leave towards a woman’s years of work. Those who started work below the age of 16 will be entitled to retire at 58, she said.
Revamping the pensions system has been a key element of French President Emmanuel Macron’s election campaigns.
“The goal is to consolidate our pay-as-you-go pension plans, which would otherwise be threatened as we continue to finance on credit,” he said in a New Year speech.
An earlier attempt by Macron to revamp the pensions system was met with nationwide strikes in 2019 before being abandoned during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Labor unions had already vowed to oppose the new law, and they reacted quickly to Tuesday’s announcement by calling for “a first day of strikes and protest” next week.
“January 19 is the launch of mobilization to stop the reform from coming into action and to make the government back down,” Laurent Berger, secretary general of France’s biggest union CFDT told journalists on Tuesday. “Nothing justifies such a brutal reform,” he added.
Workers in France have been squeezed by rising food and energy bills, and thousands took part in mass demonstrations against the cost of living on the streets of Paris last year. Strikes by workers demanding higher pay caused fuel pumps to run dry across the country a few months ago.
The French will still retire earlier
France spends more than most other countries on state pensions at nearly 14% of GDP in 2018, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
In 2019, it had the highest welfare spending of any country in the European Union at nearly 34% of GDP, according to Eurostat. That compared with 28% across the European Union as a whole.
The government argues that changes are necessary to make the system financially sustainable.
“Government agencies predict massive deficits in the coming years, as boomers continue to retire, and they need to make changes very quickly otherwise they will lose money to invest in other things,” said Renaud Foucart, a senior economics lecturer at Lancaster University in England.
Raising the retirement age to 64 will keep France below the norm in Europe and in many other developed economies, where the age at which full pension benefits apply is 65 and increasingly moving towards 67.
In the United States and the United Kingdom, the retirement age is between 66 and 67, depending on the year in which you were born. Current legislation sets a gradual rise to 68 in Britain between 2044 and 2046, although that is being reviewed and could change.
Still, pension reform in France is “very unpopular,” according to Foucart. “It’s seen as taboo,” he added.
The passage of the reforms is all but assured, despite Macron’s party lacking an absolute majority in the French parliament. In the absence of support from opposition lawmakers, the government could turn to Article 49.3 of France’s constitution, a mechanism it has used several times already to push through budget-related bills without putting them to a parliamentary vote.
Xiongjie Dai, a freelance software engineer living in the Chinese city of Suzhou, dreams about his first big trip post-Covid-19.
The 32-year-old says destinations like South Korea, Europe, Japan, New Zealand and Australia rank high on the list. But he has his eyes set on the US.
"When I have enough money, I'd like to visit America first," he tells CNN Travel. "America is the leader in both the computer science and IT industries, so I want to visit Silicon Valley and famous universities like MIT, Stanford and so on."
Dai is not the only Chinese citizen with hopes of traveling abroad, now that the Chinese government has removed quarantine entry requirements and is reissuing passports.
According to Trip.com Group data, outbound flight bookings increased 254% in late December, the day after it was announced that travel restrictions would be eased as of January 8.
"We are optimistic about the tourism outlook," Wendy Min, head of media and executive communications at the Trip.com Group, tells CNN Travel.
"The latest policy announcement is encouraging, and we expect strong pent-up demand and increasing consumer confidence."
The most popular destinations so far are Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan and Thailand, based on Trip.com Group bookings. For long-haul destinations, the US, UK and Australia lead the pack.
"The trend we have seen is that short-haul flights are popular due to (lower) prices. Singapore, South Korea and Japan have always been quite popular with Chinese travelers, even pre-Covid," says Min.
It makes sense for regional travel to recover first, says Dr. Wolfgang Georg Arlt, CEO of the China Outbound Tourism Research Institute (COTRI), since it is easier and less expensive to visit nearby destinations.
But the first quarter of 2023 will be almost exclusively urgent non-leisure travel, such as business trips, family reunions, student travel or healthcare needs, he adds.
Chinese business travelers will want to reconnect with the world's major economies, like the US, Japan and Europe. In addition, destinations like the US, UK and Australia also attract many Chinese students, so some travelers may be planning reunions.
The first wave of leisure travel
According to Arlt, leisure travel will start to pick up in the second quarter of the year when things like passport and visa approval processes are running smoothly, and flights have fully resumed.
"Some leisure travelers will be very motivated to get a passport, visa and affordable ticket. Others will wait and see what stories the 'pioneers' have when they return," he tells CNN Travel.
"The government spent three years making people in China feel afraid of the outside world, so some will still be anxious about whether it's safe to travel."
Throughout the pandemic, Chinese state media and the ruling Communist Party have repeatedly highlighted high death tolls in places like the US and UK compared to relatively low figures in China, as proof of the superiority of China's authoritarian system.
As consumer confidence builds through the first quarter, Arlt expects to see more Chinese travelers taking regional getaways that prioritize well-being, relaxation and nature, probably around April.
"After all the stress and problems, and for many also grief (due to the high Covid-19 death toll in China), it can be expected that many will choose to get away from it all for a long weekend or at some beach resort in Vietnam, Thailand or Cambodia," says Arlt.

Sienna Parulis-Cook is the director of marketing and communications at the Dragon Trail International digital marketing agency. She points to the Maldives as a beach destination of choice for affluent travelers in 2023.
"The Maldives appeals especially to the luxury market and those looking for a beautiful beach getaway -- it's also a destination that seemed to recover from the impact of Covid relatively quickly compared to other places in the world, so this might play into its popularity now," she says.
Others will plan trips around hobbies, like mountain biking, hiking, wine-tasting, cooking and calligraphy.
"A lot of Chinese people have had time to develop their special interests (during the past three years)," says Arlt. "The pandemic has proven how fragile and short life can be, so doing meaningful things has become that much more important."
The most desirable destinations
Before the pandemic, China was the world's largest outbound travel market by departure numbers and spending. In 2019, Chinese travelers took 154.6 million trips abroad and spent nearly $255 billion, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
Based on COTRI data projections, overseas trips could reach 115 million -- a rebound of about three-quarters -- by the end of the year, including trips to the Chinese territories of Hong Kong and Macau.
Many of the same destinations will resume their top positions as travel rebounds, Parulis-Cook says.
In 2019, Thailand was the No. 1 most-visited destination by Chinese travelers, welcoming around 11 million Chinese tourists -- over a quarter of the country's overseas arrivals.
Japan came in a close second, drawing 9.5 million Chinese travelers in 2019, according to Japan Tourism Statistics. Vietnam, meanwhile, drew 5.8 million; South Korea, roughly 5.5 million; and Singapore, 3.6 million.
"The destinations that were popular before the pandemic are likely to resume their popularity when China reopens. The Chinese travel industry, and Dragon Trail, definitely expect destinations in Greater China (Hong Kong and Macau), Southeast, and East Asia to recover first," says Parulis-Cook.
"They're the closest to China, they have the most-recovered flight connectivity so far, and they are likely to seem safest and easiest for a first post-Covid outbound trip."
Emerging hotspots and experiences
Chinese travelers have had three years to dream about where they want to go and swap stories with friends, says Arlt, and there's growing interest in discovering less conventional destinations.
Trip.com's Min is a case in point.
"I am definitely ready to restart my travel adventures. I typically visited five new countries per year pre-Covid," she says. "Now that connection and mobility are coming back, I'm looking forward to some solo backpacking and experiencing the world through my own eyes again."
For example, Arlt says countries like Albania or Georgia are of interest.
Before the pandemic, Albania was just starting to appear on the radar for Chinese travelers. The country has centuries-old villages and authentic rural settings, which appeal to seasoned travelers, he says.
Georgia, meanwhile, attracts with its diverse mix of experiences: an urban adventure in the capital Tbilisi, skiing in the mountains, Black Sea beaches and ancient architecture.
"These are places that are still being discovered," says Arlt, who will publish a book on the next wave of China's outbound tourism later this month.
"Paris isn't impressive anymore. If you tell your friends you've been to Albania, they will think you're very special. That you have taste and a sense of adventure."
Shifts in travel styles
According to Trip.com Group, Chinese travelers are gravitating towards small groups and independent travel, rather than large tours, and paying more attention to sustainability.
Arlt has observed the same trends.
"There are big changes in the demand and expectations of Chinese outbound travelers," he says. "Young people in China are very interested in sustainability and green topics, as China is also suffering under the consequences of climate change."
According to a 2022 Dragon Trail survey, 48.3% of prospective travelers said they would choose accommodation with environmentally friendly operations, 45.5% will choose cruelty-free ways to see wild animals and 37.9% will personally contribute to the local environment by picking up trash or cycling instead of driving.
Italy football great Gianluca Vialli has died aged 58 after what he described as his “journey” with an “unwelcome travel companion” – pancreatic cancer.
Vialli announced in December that he was stepping away from his role with the Italian national federation for health reasons after consultation with his oncologists.
Vialli had publicly struggled with cancer for years. He first announced that he’d been treated in 2018 but said he was ‘very well’ in an interview with an Italian newspaper. Another bout with the disease swiftly followed in 2019, before his former team Chelsea announced he’d been ‘given the all-clear’ in 2020. Last year, the former footballer announced the disease had returned.
Vialli played for Italian clubs Sampdoria and Juventus and English Premier League team Chelsea and earned 59 caps for Italy. He was part of the Italy side which finished in third place at the 1990 World Cup.
Following brief managerial stints at Chelsea and Watford, Vialli was part of the backroom staff for the Italy national side, alongside his former Sampdoria teammate Roberto Mancini, and together won Euro 2020.
“Everybody needs to know this. We have among us an example that teaches us how to live, in any moment, in any situation,” Florenzi said, per ESPN.
“And I’m talking about Gianluca Vialli, For us, he’s special. Without him, and without Mancini and the other coaches, this victory would mean nothing. He is a living example. I know he’ll get angry, but I just had to say it.”
Having started his club career at Cremonese in 1980 in Italy’s lower leagues, Vialli got his big break in 1984 when he joined Sampdoria.
Together with Mancini – they earned the nickname “I Gemelli del Gol” or “the goal twins” – the two forwards ushered in the club’s most successful period in its history.
Vialli said in a 2019 interview on Sky Sports that the pair’s relationship worked so well on the pitch because they “liked each other as human beings.”
“We were different, but we were getting on extremely well,” Vialli told Sky Sports, “which helps a lot, I think.
“And then on the pitch, we were very complementary… when you’ve got two strikers who don’t care whether the other striker is scoring three and you’re not scoring any, it’s fantastic because the only thing that we wanted was for the team to win.”
Vialli finished as top scorer for the Sampdoria side which won their first ever Serie A title in 1991, also winning the Italian Cup three times and finishing runner-up in the European Cup in 1992 to Barcelona.

Vialli then moved to Italian giants Juventus in 1992 for what was then a world record fee of £12 million ($14.57 million).
During his four seasons with the Turin-based club, Vialli enjoyed more success, winning the Serie A title again, as well as the Champions League and the UEFA Cup.
He still remains the last Juventus captain to lift the Champions League trophy, something he said means a lot to him personally.
“For me, it’s very important to be the last captain of Juventus to have lifted the Champions League because all the fans still remember that, I still remember that and they see me as the last captain of a very successful Italian side in Europe,” Vialli told Sky Sports in 2015 ahead of the Champions League final between Juventus and Barcelona.
“On the one hand, I want Juventus to win because I’ve got so many friends there. But on the other hand, it would be annoying to see someone taking my place.
“Having said that, to have my picture lifting the cup next to Gaetano Scirea – a legendary Juventus defender, probably one of the best Italian defenders of all time – and Gianluigi Buffon, it will be like having your painting hanging next to a Picasso and a Van Gogh.”
Vialli left for Chelsea in 1996, winning the FA Cup in his first season in England before being appointed player-manager in the following season.
Vialli retired from professional football in 1999 to focus on his role as a full-time manager. As a manager at Chelsea, he won the FA Cup and the League Cup before being fired in 2000.
A brief stint as Watford manager followed before he spent many years as a football pundit and analyst.
In 2018, Vialli revealed he was “fine” after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Following his initial cancer diagnosis, Vialli said that he felt a sense of “shame” because of the illness, adding that he would wear a sweater under his shirt so no one would notice his changing physique.
He called cancer “an unwelcome travel companion” in his book, ‘Goals: Inspirational Stories to Help Tackle Life’s Challenges.’ “I don’t see this as a battle,” he wrote.
“I am not a warrior. I am not fighting cancer: it’s too strong an enemy and I would not stand a chance. I am a man who is on a journey and cancer has joined me on that journey… my goal is to keep walking, keep moving until he’s had enough and leaves me alone.”
In 2020, Vialli was given the all-clear following a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer, according to an announcement from his former team, Chelsea.
At the time, Vialli spoke about the struggles he went through.
“Regaining my health means seeing myself in the mirror again, seeing the hair grow, not having to draw eyebrows on with a pencil,” he said. “It can appear strange in this moment (of the pandemic), compared to many others I feel very fortunate.”
In 2021, he said that he was battling pancreatic cancer once again after it had returned, stepping away from his role with the Italian national federation in December 2022 upon the advice from medical experts.
Some potentially good news for travelers hoping to visit China in 2023.
After nearly three years of being largely cut off from the world, Chinese authorities announced the lifting of several major Covid-related entry restrictions that take effect on January 8.
Among these, China has dropped quarantine requirements for all international arrivals, its most significant move yet as it veers away from its stringent zero-Covid policy. But who can visit?
Here, we address some of the major questions that might be on travelers' minds right now as they start planning their 2023 journeys.
Can foreigners travel to China for leisure tourism now?
China isn't rolling out the red carpet for international leisure tourists looking to experience the country's many attractions just yet.
Borders remain largely closed to foreigners, apart from business or family visits, though the government has signaled it is looking to ease restrictions in this area, too. No timeline has been announced.
According to the government notices, for now it plans to focus on facilitating visa applications for foreign nationals traveling to China for business, employment, study, family visits and reunions.
George Cao, CEO of Dragon Trail International, a China-focused marketing and research company, tells CNN Travel via email that several things need to happen before the country will reopen to leisure tourists following the lifting of quarantine.
"The next step is for China to once again start issuing visas for the purpose of tourism. Although this is part of the reopening plan that has been announced, we don't yet have an official date," he says.
"It's also crucial for the international flight schedule to increase, which will make it easier to get to China and also bring down flight prices, which are still well above pre-pandemic levels. This has already started for certain destinations -- for example, many flights between China and South Korea, and between China and Singapore have resumed already."
But it's not clear yet how quick the process will be for other destinations/routes, he adds.
As noted, quarantine is no longer required as of January 8. (Prior to that date inbound travelers have been subjected to five days of hotel quarantine and three days of self-isolation at home upon arrival.)
Travelers heading into China now are only required to take a nucleic acid test 48 hours before departure. Those with negative results no longer have to apply for a green health code from Chinese embassies and consulates abroad before entering.
They do however need to fill in the results in their customs health declaration forms. If they test positive, they will not be permitted to travel to China until their tests come back negative.

Though foreign leisure tourists can't visit yet, the changes are particularly welcome for Chinese nationals studying or working outside the country. Those who could not afford the sky-high prices of plane tickets and lengthy hotel quarantines have not been able to go home for nearly three years.
Is international tourism important to China?
Even when borders do open to international tourists, the question of how much demand there is in both the short- and long-term remains.
"This is a big unknown at the moment, and will be one of the most critical factors in the recovery of inbound travel into China in the months and years to come," says Cao.
"The Chinese government has increasingly recognized the importance of inbound travel, and China was one of the world's leading tourism destinations in 2019, with 65.7 million arrivals."
He adds his company expects that the government will allocate more resources to the promotion of inbound travel in the years to come, "to rebuild and expand this market, and develop new destinations and itineraries for international visitors."
What are the current Covid restrictions in China?
China abruptly abandoned its long-held zero-Covid policy in early December following nationwide protests over its heavy social and economic toll.
Authorities rolled back mass testing, lockdowns and allowed positive patients to quarantine at home.
Mobile phone health QR codes still exist but are no longer widely enforced for those entering public spaces or riding public transportation.
Technically there are no government mandates in place concerning face masks/social distancing. But those visiting indoor public spaces or riding on public transportation will likely be asked to put on a mask.
There's one major shadow hanging over China's reopening plans -- Covid-19. Cases have skyrocketed in recent weeks as restrictions loosened.
The outbreak has overwhelmed hospitals and crematoriums, triggered shortages of basic medicines, and sparked fears of an even darker month ahead as experts warn of a spread to less resourced rural areas during the upcoming Lunar New Year.
And now, the World Health Organization is accusing China of "under-representing" the severity of its Covid outbreak and has criticized its "narrow" definition of what constitutes a Covid death, as top global health officials urge Beijing to share more data about the explosive spread.
